Normal mode looks hard, even if you're cautious. Hard mode will require you to make very little mistakes. And nightmare mode will not only require you to be extremely careful, but you'll have to have the right party makeup, i.e. healer & a tank, and specializised classes that can knock out a couple monsters for most of a fight.
just a prediction. But i am certain nightmare mode will make a lot of people look like noobs.
I'm certain the nightmare difficulty will require your party to have a "Healer" & "Tank."

No, all games do not have them. Many party-based RPGs have them, and those roles have become more defined since World of Warcraft introduced them to a large number of people. Even in DnD 3.X, a fighter, arguably the most tank class, had no way of drawing enemies to him, which is pretty important for a tank.

I think I will play Normal difficulty first. Maybe turn it up to Hard if Normal is too easy, but I'll probably play on Normal for my first playthrough.

Thinking either normal or hard if normal seems to be too much a cake walk for the first run through. Though I do have to admit, the tactical decisions that nightmare will prolly require does have me intreigued.

As usual ill probably start at hard. If that is not brutal enough, up to nightmare.
I want a challenge. Even on my first time playing.

A tank is not necessarily needed in this game. What you do need is some method of crowd control, some method of dealing damage, and some method of staying alive. Tanks help with crowd control and with staying alive but the same can be had with spells and abilities that disable mobs or with a DPS type that draws agro and then kites while the rest of the party deals damage. I personally prefer to use a tank and wish that it was harder to get through the game without one.

Nightmare still feels easier than my first hard diff. And I do take a whole melee party for a night in town sometimes. All the movies I'm making are in nightmare and hell, major battles are taking a lot less time than they had in Hard, my char is still uninjured, deals more damage and contributes more to party dmg, with a better hit rate too.
Experience and tactics are valuable weapons in this game, imho.

I did my first and only (so far) play through on nightmare. I have to say that you get punished the most if you rush into an area without scouting it first. Rogue and/or survival skill help dealing with that.
The second major headache is ambushes. If you want to get through those easily, get a mage with crowd control. During the earlier stages of the game, Morrigan is more useful for crowd control than Wynne.
Also, if you are using melee characters for both tanking and DPS and you are not a great fan of Force Field, then having healing spells is essential.

I've finished the game on nightmare and i must say it is too easy even on nightmare. It was actually easier for me on nightmare than it was the first time on hard.
To beat the game on nightmare you have to follow some basic rules(these go for all Bioware games btw)
1. Kill the mage first. This is a must and i have to say a good reason to keep a rogue in the party. Rogue goes in, kills the mage fight won.
2. If things look bad RUN. Not all will follow you since pathing is actually not that good in this game.
3. Don't save money and use potions. Potions of different potency are on different cooldowns so you can drink a small one, a normal one, and a large one in succesion. A few items are worth saving for, most aren't so don't go cheap for some items that looks good. Use that gold for potions instead.
4. Use ranged weapons. Seriously some fights are insanely easy if you just don't go in and use bows. Namely the Brood Mother fight.
In conclusion this games just looks initially hard. It's a very easy game once you wrap your mind around it. To easy to be honest.
So i would like to make an official sugestion to Bioware.
Make nightmare harder. Make it worthwhile to use those salves. Make some fights where you simply have to change you're party to win. I would love to see Crowd control fights, Gear check fights( fights you just can't win unless you are of a certain level and have the best items) and so on.

QFT - as for using Rogues, I'd say its mage vs mage with Mana Clash (aka Mage-be-gone) for the win all the way.

If you have experience with RPG's (like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights etc) Nightmare is not difficult. Even the final battle is largely easy if you just pay attention certain obvious things. If it looks like it's gonna hurt, it probably is gonna hurt so don't touch it....

I just had the intention to talk about the lack of difficulty of nightmare and discovered that more than 1 person had posted a topic about it. I just didn't feel like starting a new one.

Yeah i just finished Nightmare.
Wynne is a must.
Morrigan was a mage tank (but barely any group attacks, due to team damage)
and i had Lelianna and Alistar swapping throughout different bits.

I'm on my first playthrough, and i'm doing a no deaths/nightmare run with a couple of other self imposed rules - No force fielding my own party members, and no storm spells indoors/underground.
I'm pretty much using the same 4 the whole time. I'm a d-elf rouge archer, Allistar, Sten ( started with the dog, then switched to him ) and Morrigan with no healing spells. I want to keep her like a old school d&d offensive mage. Healing spells are for clerics !
So no you don't need healing spells. Just make potions !

Why the hell did you bump a year old topic?
If a topic has been dead for a year you don't search for it and post in it
this should be locked

anyways, I did Nightmare on my first run, it was difficult at first but then you get into the groove of it, sometimes I checked my difficulty to see if it was still set to Nightmare since I have played games were it automatically switched back to normal
I always play the hardest difficulty first in games
