I've also noticed some weapons instantly reloading when their clip is empty. Not reload-cancelling it. Instantly reloading. I can't explain it entirely as I haven't figured out just what triggers the instant load, though I have swapped from an empty acolyte to my shotgun, brought up my shield, then switched weapons while in the shield to find the acolyte reloaded.
Odd.

I can see it coming in handy at times when a rocket launcher is needed. Or if you run out of ammo with an enemy in your face. Can you reload?

In addition to being able to freeze/stagger all non-armored enemies (including Phantoms) while the shield is up.

Actually I gives you shield hater's an application for your shield. If you're killing enemy's afar with your long range weapon (Carnifex), you can shield up, and switch to a short range weapon (Piranha), when something nasty sneaks up on you.

How?
Hold melee for awesome shieldage, hold swap weapon for awesome hand-to-holster/holster-to-hand weapon teleportage.

Unfortunately switching to the missle launcher cancels the shield, also no reloading either.
