My GeForce 9600 Gt video card doesnt seem to support dx11, so the end result is that whereas i could run DA with hardly any FPS with the highest graphic settings on XP, Im experiencing a frightening performance drop and stuttering under win 7.
Drivers are up to date.

Spent 1 hour searching for a solution, but neither running DX web installer ( deleted d3dx9_36.dll and reinstalled to obtain any possibly missing dx9 files), nor adding -dx9 to the target command line seems to do anything. Xp sp3 compatibility mode also does zilch.

Any suggestions?

Dao is a directx 9 game. It runs in directx 9 and has nothing to do with directx 11 compatibility of your card.

Dao is a cpu intensive game, so your cpu may be bottleneck but it is highly unlikely as any dual core would be good enough.

I was having this problem few days back because my cpu was overheating in this freaking summer heat (I live in India), and the cpu was throttling down to prevnt damage.

My machine is 4gb RAM, geforce 9600 gt, amd phenom II dual-core 3.1ghz.

Not "highly unlikely", but rather "downright inpossible" that dao is too intensive for that and, as I said, it used to run flawlessly on XP, and the room has an air conditioner, so the summer heat is not a factor either.

About 3-4 other topics on the subject pinpoint that the problem lies within the fact that win 7 uses DX11 , which my video card doesnt support, hence why i have significantly less FPS under win 7.

As Blazomancer said, DAO is not coded for DX11, so it doesn't matter if Win7 and/or your graphics card are DX11 capable. All DX11 (and DX10) cards are backward-compatible to applications (like DAO) which were written for the DX9 instruction set.

If you don't already have the latest driver for your card, get it.

I have the latest driver, as i said in the OP. I'll try re-installing it when i get home, but that is unlikely to change anything.

But if you are certain the DX isnt to blame, then i'll rephrase the question:  Barring drivers, what could be the reason that dao ran perfectly under XP, and win 7 delivers such a heavy blow to the FPS?

I am running dao in win7 and also experiencing lags, stuttering, and terrible slowdowns sometimes after about half an hour or so. I've read people discussing about an obvious memory leak that was never really fixed completely. You can try setting the affinity of the game executable to only one cpu core and see if it gets better. But other than that I have no idea. Sorry buddy, may be others will have some solution.

I've tried overclocking my Graphics card and CPU (although temp goes above 90, damn), even though my specs are way above recommended, but still lag kicks in after some time almost every time.

@Heals.like.Jesus (presumptious name, but whatever...)

Your OP doesn't say anything about your having updated any drivers for your graphics card.  Just that you re-ran the DX install routine and fiddled wityh command-line switches.  (That deals with your OS and applications and how they talk to your hardware, not your hardware level itself.)  Are you sure you have the most recent driver from nVidia for your specific card?  Their website lists it as v301.42, released May 22, 2012.  (Personally, I'm running the more recent beta v304.48, and there's an even newer one than that already published.)

@Blazomancer and Heals.like.Jesus;

Have you installed the 1.05 patch?   (social.bioware.com/page/da-patches)
Besides addressing some problems with DLC authorization, it was built to prevent lagging problems with DX10.1 cards (like Heals'..)

@Thandal NLyman - Yes, I've installed patch 1.05 over my ultimate edition copy which comes with the 1.04 patch. The game is fairly playable enough except when lag kicks in during intense scenes and remains like that for a long time. I have noticed from process managers that when these slowdowns occur, free physical memory drops very low, near about 2-3 MB, which is otherwise not the case since I've disable all unwanted services and often disable my antivirus/firewall when I'm playing offline. Restarting the game works but it is just a matter of time before the next fit of lag breaks in. But well, this game is great enough to be played even with such nuisances. :)

How long are you playing before this happens?

@RaenImrahl - It's more or less random. Sometimes half an hour, sometimes may be one hr. Crashes do occur at times, but they are not quite an issue. As I mentioned, even while lagging, I can keep playing fairly enough if I'm in a patient mood and keep using pause to issue commands and stuff. But then, although quite rarely, there will be severe FPS drop, that I have to restart the game or watch everyone pulling matrix stunts.

Yes, its the 301.42 version and yes i am using the 1.05 patch

Also, nothing presumptious about the name "Heals.like.Jesus"

Jesus healed people, My mage heals people. Jesus ressurected lazarus from the dead, i revived party companions. Jesus took 3 days to ressurect, i took  3 seconds, post battle.

The similarities between us are stunnng, really.

@Heals; What mods (if any) and "other" graphics settings (AA, Frame Buffer, etc.)?

@Blazomancer; What hardware specs?

Well, the graphic specs are a moot point. As i said - on XP i could have everything maxed without a trace of slowdown.

if i cant make win 7 perform just as well under the same conditions, then everything else is a band-aid.
Bottom line seems to be - new hardware or reverting to XP.
Thanks for trying to help, though.
