Consoles are great, look at how far they have come from the old NES days. I bought the xbox 360 in March 2006. I loved playing ME1 and ME2 on the 360, but since then I've built a new gaming PC and so I played ME3 on the PC.

The mouse is so much more precise. I don't have any disdain for the console players since I am one of them, but first and foremost I am a PC player who loves his mouse and keyboard.

I play on all 3 options (not me3 specifically) and PC players suck just as bad as any one else. They seem to think they're better because m/k is easier to use. I wish that were the case.

Just something I've noticed on forums, there seems to be some contempt for console players. I'm just wondering why.

Because people are dicks, and it's easy to get **** wrong. They see the large number of complaints from xbox users and, instead of rationally concluding that it's simply because the vast majority of sales went to the Xbox, they conclude that console players suck more.

Then when you're done with driver SDK's, now look up Direct X SDK's SDK (Software Developers KITS)

Oh, so you're talking about graphics APIs. Well, now that we have that out of the way (kinda, OpenGL doesn't have an SDK or 'kit'), how about you answer the rest of my questions? Cause it still doesn't make a lot of sense to be honest.

GallowsPole wrote...

And what would a game developer want with a kit to develop system drivers?

Ummm what do you think every single piece of hardware needs to even run on your PC. The one specifically running your video card.

It needs drivers. Which sure as hell aren't developed by game developers.

No the drivers are not written by the game developers, but they have to be tested and implented and usually thats on the lower end of the scale as opposed to the latest and greatest so a vast majority of people can play it. Maybe I wasnt clear enough. I tend to babble. All I meant was, even though, yes, game manufacturers roll out software capable of running present and future technologies, however, the drivers, SDK's, API's, what have you, currently are not updated fast enough to take advantage of them.

Well, it's certainly clearer what you mean now but that's still not how it works.
Now, I feel no desire to explain the architecture of a graphics card so suffice it to say that you can basically do whatever the hell you want with them. DirectX and OpenGL are just interfaces to use the card, they don't limit you in what you can actually do and neither does the hardware architecture. The only thing that does limit you is the power of the card.

As John Carmack once said - everything DirectX 11 directly offers you in functionality can be achieved with DirectX 9 as well. It would just be a little harder to do. And this, naturally, goes for the hardware as well as the software.

I do, pretty much every day, and while the wastelands of CoD and Halo are rife with racial slurs and children shrieking obscenities, I have found that Mass Effect 3 players are generally nice folks.

I had a choice years ago wether to go console or PC, I chose to invest my money in consoles. Now, I want to change to PC.

A mouse is superior to an analogue stick, however a keyboard is inferior for movement. Controllers also have force feedback, which coupled with the added freedom of movement adds to the games overall immersion, along with the ability to play on a huge plasma screen with the lights dimmed down on a wonderful comfy sofa.

For RTS, FPS, and most good RPG games the M/Keyboard is better - but for beat em ups, driving games, and most social "have your friends round for a good time" games a console is better.

I hate that consoles are slowing down the evolution of gaming, they will always be inferior, and I personally think that shelling out more for a PC to play games on is in the long run better than paying less for a console. Look at the DAO mods, they alone are worth it to me, never mind the added hair textures for mass effect.

Soon I shall join the glorious gaming master race, soon..

because the PC players secretly love us.

they just have trouble admitting it because they've loved us since we were childhood friends and every time they see us talk to another gaming network they cringe and cry themselves to sleep out of fear they've lost us for good but smile brightly when they realize it was just our aunt or something.

I'm trying to say they cannot spit it out.

What kind of disdain? If it's about skills then I must say that it's easier to aim for headshot on PC than it is on console. However, moving avatar around on console using the thumb-stick should be easier than on PC using keys.

It's quite easy on keyboard since you have keys and mouse, its like having two thumbsticks to move but more precise (the mouse helps a lot).

Also, we don't have to deal with the 12 year olds on xbox live.

Apart from that, the audiences are entirely different, since computers are harder to use/require more knowledge it means that console users are (let's put it kindly) "less knowing" and mostly of a smaller age. Not only that, but console players are a lot more in numbers than pc players.

So they need to cater to the needs of console players most.

Which is what people call "dumbing down" a game.

Speaking as a 30-year-old Ph.D. student with a work laptop and an XBox, I think your assumptions might be a little off.

Consoles are slowing down the evolution of pcs and personally that's where my disdain comes from.
Nothing personal, I just consider you dead weight.

"Console users are utterly worthless, and are preventing me from playing the really awesome games we'd get if only they would all just die in a fire.

Nothing personal."

I guess we needed a type specimen for the attitude the OP was talking about...

Personally I think--for those people that do look down on console users--it's because there's a psychological need to assign a higher value to things that cost more. However, PC users do have some very real advantages in control: a mouse and WASD makes for faster, more flexible, and more precise movement and aiming than the dual-joystick layout the Xbox and PS3 controllers use.

They can also record and analyze gameplay much more easily, of which I'm definitely jealous. :?

Way to blow this out of proportion.

First off, no you're not the average console dude if you have a phd.
The average console dude doesn't even bother checking these forums, much less reply in them.
If and when they do, their threads most likely contain profanity and poor grammar/syntax.
Check out the locked threads if you don't want to take my word for it.

Second, I don't like the fact that people buying consoles are basically throwing their money encouraging big game companies to continue this cycle of bad games (bad graphics bad storyline bad controls or just the same stuff over and over again) Now obviously there are exceptions for this but mostly that's the case. In doing so, they leave those companies no choice but to invest in the same old crap rather than find something new and intriguing or even bother to expand their stuff. Which is what was happening constantly from mid nineties to early 2000s.

Having to buy new hardware during that period every two years is overly exaggerated.
Sure, you *had* to, but only if you wanted to run everything new at the highest possible settings.
I could play stuff just as well albeit with lower graphic settings. The thing is, whenever I had enough money I just upgraded what I needed to upgrade and everything was fine and dandy. If you weren't aiming for the top tier stuff the prices were very reasonable.

Which is why (again, personally) I never really understood why anyone would spend 300 quid to get an imitation of a computer with loads of limitations. Oh and almost double the price for every single game you buy.

Tablet gaming tapped into previously untapped niches. It doesn't take away from the already established, and still massive PC market.

win 8 is geared towards turning PCs into tablets. or, more to the point, it's a recognition that, for the majority of current PC users, what they want to do can be accomplished with a tablet. it's the natural evolution for the personal computer: desktop - > laptop - > tablet - > pipboy 3000 - > omni-tool

major corps will always create with profit in mind, so products will always be geared towards mass appeal and what makes them the most money. that's just how capitalism works.

Wow, a lot of these posts are pretty hostile. Bahahaha

I used to be strictly PC and enjoyed many AMAZING games throughout those years. I also experienced that period when games were starting to be dumbed down for the sake of consoles (I think it was a COD game). They started to limit the number of players in a match, the ability to have dedicated servers (stupidest imo), and even the graphics. It was terrible. So terrible I refused to even purchase the game.

I agree it is sad that that happens. I wish devs would create a game to its current maximum potential, like they used to. It seems like such as waste to invest so much in a gaming rig and not be able to enjoy current games which can't even take advantage of your gear's full capabilities. It used to be that every 6 months, something new would come out, and your rig would be the bare minimum requirement for a game in a couple of years. Tragic, really, that many games have been limited to whatever the current consoles' capabilites are.

I do notice a difference in the community, too. You'll find idiots, BSers, foul-mouthed kids on any platform, but it almost seems inversely proportional between console and PC. Most everyone I've ever met on PC has been very cool, and I've even created lasting friendships with some. This hasn't happened on Xbox (yet), though I have met some very cool people playing ME3 MP. Maybe the fact that you actually have to take the time to type on PC is a stupidity filter in and of itself. Some people need that filter for their mouths.

It is true that console gaming mostly contributed to the gaming boom, as they are available and easy to use for the mass public. They're cheaper, easier to maintain, no need for any kind of knowledge when setting up, no customization options to complicate things... you just buy, plug and play. Perfect for any age, which is why they are so popular, and why gaming companies have both profited from them and cater to them. Because of this, the gaming company has really thrived. However, this does not necessarily mean that PC gamers owe anything to console gamers. It is great that gaming companies now have more freedom and possibilities, but many have also become commercial. To be honest, the best games I've ever played were from before the console "boom".

In any case, I understand any bitterness or ill regard from PC gamers. I have felt it myself at a time. They have nothing against the console users themselves. They just got the short end of the stick when they paid to have better.

For me, it depends on the type of game.

FPS/TPS? ESDF + multi-button mouse all the way.

For pretty much everything else I prefer a controller/console. Especially 2d fighters and games that utilize or require similar input chains.

If affordable consoles didn't exist the majority of the video game playing public would disappear. Or switch to cruddy social games. There wouldn't be any funding for these "hardcore next gen pc games" to begin with. So I disagree with the notion that consoles are holding back pc growth. If anything, consoles are financing the future of games.

When you understand that a console actually provides a more fair and popular platform to play on, even if it doesn't have all the options, or you understand that some people like to separate their desktop/serious computer from their gaming, you'll begin to understand why consoles make sense even to some who could easily play the game on a PC.
