Drops on September 18th, is only $20, and is up for pre-purchase. Sounds like a good deal to me.

The news drops in 40 minutes - I'll edit the OP with the information then. I hope the blasted thing is coming soon, as I've been eager to give this series a spin, and an "enhanced" remake seems like an ideal place to start.

Hmmm...

At a price like that who can resist?

The graphics are amazing:

And they are saying that there's around 18 hours of new content from the three new companions and their quests and also from the new quest-line.  Technically this is RPG of the year already right? Just shows how much life there is yet in the good old infinity engine and here's hoping that after Beamdog do all new Enhanced Editions of games like Icewind Dale and Planescape, we get some new RPG's built on the infinity engine.

Hmmm...

I wonder if I can import my BG characters into the Enhanced Edition...

Thanks for posting. These new screens have made my day along with the thought of new games being built on the infinity engine somewhere down the line. Until then, at least all these Enhanced Editions are technically all massive expansions of new content on the original games.

Am I correct in thinking that it's download only? I'd love a boxed release with a cool manual like BG2 had. You just don't get good manual's these days.

they mentioned in a FAQ thread that they are still negotiating with the publisher (atari) for a boxed collector's edition release.

Ah, thanks. I'll wait for word on that then.

The environment looks gorgeous, but I feel like the sprites look really bad. It is probably because they stand out badly against the lush background. I wonder why they didn't just use some technology from Planescape. I think Planescape holds up really well even in these modern times.

I'm probably going to buy this, even though I'm not really a PC gamer. Everyone hails it as one of the greatest RPG's ever, so I'm curious to see if it lives up to the hype!!!

Planescape: Torment does use the same technology, just the sprites are larger and more detailed in Planescape: Torment, with the 'camera' being zoomed in further.

Baldur's Gate looked exactly like this, btw. Although maybe a little less softer. It seems they applied a blur filter or something to the background to make the compression artifacts less visible. But that may be my imagination.

Why are so many people so impatient for a game's release nowadays? That kind of attitude only enccourages shorter development cycles and released garbage like DA 2, y'know. Personally, I didn't expect BGEE's release until somewhere near the end of September, beginning of October, even. Anyway, I am definitely going to buy this one. :)

So what is new in this enhanced edition? Will we be able to play BG1 with all the improvements and classes from BG2?

New companions? New quests? Updated graphics? Sign me up! I know it's easy to complain about everyone rebooting old franchises or sequels or what-not, but I don't mind. BG was a phenomenal franchise that deserves extra upgrade love 1 1/2 decades after its initial release.

I wish the original BG was released with a NWN-style toolset too way back in the day. Now that would have been fun, and probably more intuitive than whatever is out there on the internet.

It fixes a lot of bug/glitches. And modernizes(word?) infinity engine.  High resultions with zoom in feature.

It comes with TotSC and 3 new, romanceble party members(a monk, a wild mage and a Half Orc Black Guard who will be transfered to BG2 EE also.
New questlines for those party members.

A seperate map from game, The Black Pits. A stand-alone adventure set deep within the Underdark
• Fifteen levels of arena-style combat challenges
• Full control and customization of up to six party members
• Over 6 hours of additional gameplay

All BG2 kits(and maybe new kits)more portraits and main character voice sets.
And some improved multiplayer.
Over 400 improvments

most importantly a slight chance of getting BG3 or something similar.

So that is a yes on BG2 race and classes? Like Kensai?

Edit: oh should have clicked the 400 improvements buttons. Sub Races?

Yeah all BG2 (2,5th edition)stuff is in.
Now subraces are a mystery. First i tought it was Half Orc but wasnt a sub-race it was main.
We need to wait and see to it.

It's cheaper still. $17 if you prepurchase it before September 18. I bought it without a second thought. Can't wait to see the new areas and painted cut scenes.

Blackguard is new to this game, yep. Beamdog has not revealed any other new classes so far. This may be it.

Heh its 17.99 yet people complain on forums and want to give $20 to support the company. :)

And yeah, it seems they add some classess to, also they mentioned they added a kit to a kitless class and maybe Black Guard is that one.

I really wonder painted cut scenes too, want see how did they changed our death animation :P

Edit: On a second tought both fighters and paladins have kits, so Black Guard sounds like a new class( or maybe a prestige class:blink:) Barbarian, monk and sorceror dont had kits if i remember right.

As a long time Baldur's Gate fan I gotta say... I'm not one of those people*. XD I think charging full price for a remake is greedy, and would be very hesitant to pay them more than $30 for BGEE. Beamdog has to set a low price to entice newcomers as well. Otherwise their audience will consist of primarily diehard fans.

This game has a good shot at introducing a whole new generation of players to a classic RPG. Hopefully Beamdog remembered that and didn't exclusively cater to us grognards when designing new content.

*Referring to folks at the BGEE forums willing to pay $50+ for it.
