Skyrim is a good game and all, but the plot and characters are boring as hell. To me it's pretty important.
Skyrim might be a better made game, but I like Mass Effect 3 more.
Skyrim > ME3 in EVERY way.

Maybe Ill finish it one day, so far at 10 hours of gameplay and bored to death. Nice views still at some places.
I've had my Skyrim game going for months - mainly 'cause I play it it small segments rather than staying on it for hours at a time. It does get a bit tedious otherwise.

No.
When I play games, I want to be entertained.
The ME series entertained me. Morrowind and Oblivion always made me feel like I have to entertain myself. I got bored with both games, so I could not even finish them and that does not happen very often.
Won't even try Skyrim so, it's a matter of taste.

As it has been said here, it all comes down to personal preference. I personally like story and character driven games more than open world, but I have enjoyed both types of games. Skyrim does some things better than ME and ME does other things better. Both are still good games.

Mass Effect: Extremely limited and linear world with awesome story and characters.
They're pretty much polar opposites in that regard.
in a perfect world, the lovechild of bethesda and Bioware would be the best RPG ever, but oh well, we still have CDProjekt.

It's kinda hard to compare the games because they are from different styles of rpg. ME originated as very story focused and character driven while Skyrim and the rest of the ES was an open world game. The two styles focus on different aspects of the rpg and the result is two very different games. It does not make one style better than the other, just different.

Skyrim is an example of a massive beautiful world with no depth. Mass Effect is the opposite: you're more constrained, but the depth is massive.
Your actions in Skryim mean NOTHING. They just change what the guards say to you. The world is very beautiful to explore though.
Though Skyrim is still a pretty good game, Mass effect any day.
Pretty much this.
Also, they are not even supposed to be the same kind of game, so comparing them head to head is kinda useless. Skyrim is a more traditional RPG experience, it's all about leveling up your character, collecting loot, getting new items, exploring, etc. While ME has some of those elements, it's more about the story and characters.
As far as gameplay, I'll only say I'm still playing ME3, both MP and SP. Haven't touched Skyrim since ME3 came out. I'll eventually pick up Dawnguard but have no plans to do so anytime soon.

To be honest, I find it silly comparing these two games. One is a hack and slash fantasy sandbox while the other is a guns blazing story driven cinematic. As many people have already said, apples and oranges, there both fruits but other than that...
Apples and oranges. Doesn't mean we can't determine which fruit is riper and was cultivated better.

If you compare ME3 with The Witcher 2 than its an valid comparison which ME3 looses pretty clearly.
The only thing you can say about Skyrim vs ME3 is that Skyrim was well received while ME3 just summoned a giant sh**storm.

Yeah but both have very different definitions for what is ripe and how to cultivate it, its very difficult to put the two together and objectively determine which is better.

Skyrim is a nice game, but it's tedious (evidently to become a guard you must first suffer a knee injury and why is it I can't go a few clicks outside a city w/o being attacked by wolves and attacked by wolves and attacked by wolves) and I could care less about most of the NPCs.

That doesn't mean I don't also love playing Mass Effect. If I had to pick between the two, I honestly don't think I could. They are both fantastic FUN, and that's what's important. Mass Effect's stories/characters are better, TES's freedom is better, etc, etc, yada, yada, *yawn*. Play whjat you think is fun, and sod anyone who tells you otherwise.

James Vega is not that bad of a character. Diana Allers can pretty much not exist if you don't want her to.
