In my experience, you don't really need a mic to play the game effectively, especially if you are playing with people you know and have worked out strategy beforehand.
The biggest benefits to a mic that I can see are preventing double Cobra shots to the same location, and more of a social feel to the game. Other than that, I'm not sure if gameplay changes much. Why the disdain for non-mic users then?
Why the hate for non-mic users?

21st century gaming, better bring a mic.

How do you work out a strategy if one of the people doesn't have a mic? If you don't have a mic, there is a considerable less chance I'm going to bust my ass to get you across the map cause you have medigel you're not telling me about.

I try to use my mic if possible but I'm staying in a small apartment at the moment and I generally play late at night. So I don't use it at the moment apart from the muted thanks or gg because I don't want to wake up the flat

It's a multiplayer game, is it SO horrible to maybe interact with the other human beings? If I wanted to play with unresponsive squadmates who do random things, I'd play SP.

You really don't need one, it just helps immensely. But my broke ass won't get one for a loooong time.

If I am playing bronze/silver I don't use a mic, relax & blow stuff up.
If playing gold (have not tried platinum) I have the mic available for coordinating

Cuz you won't/can't tell me when a hunter/phantom is sneaking up on me or if I'm about to get sandwiched between two banshees. I also can't bit** about magna-grabs with you.
Plus I like to play with people who I can laugh with and tell jokes back and forth with. Silent teammates are for pubs and I don't play pubs.

If its anything less then gold, mics don't really mattter at all. on gold you want at least 3people on mics (since 3 people can get through gold most of the time) on platinum you want all 4 since most people (all the non elites) need to have a plan and the ability to warn people about things like where turrets are set up and such

LOL..you can afford a $60 game plus the equipment and connection to play it but you can't afford a $10 mic.

I rock gold without a mic and do just fine. I do enjoy chatting on a mic but rl circumstances prevent me from doing so. You don't need a mic to do gold

I've played plenty of Gold games with no mic. It's not necessary as long as you are aware.
In fact, most games I've played with people with mics usually end up in just chatting. Not much spoken which is conducive to gameplay.
I've started to use my mic about 2 weeks ago, and it does help. I think you really need one for Platinum, as you have to call out random boss enemies encroaching on your position or if there is a Hunter in the same room as the others, etc.

Must be his parents buying the game. Ask them for a mic as well. Mow the lawn if you have one.Ryan_H wrote...

OP, for all the reasons these guys have said using mics is better. But there is no hate, if people are not using mics then I know that we will have to put up with no discussion of strategy, selection of classes going into the match, etc. In one platinum lobby one of the guys mentioned that he did not have any medigel - we switched it down to gold straight away, lol.
I can't tell you how many times folk ran to different parts of the map because we did not discuss how to set-up, etc. Also duplicate cobra usage, yatta, yatta...

I keep my mic handy, but don't always plug it in. I don't think I really need it unless the people I am playing with seem particularly social and feel a need to talk. I agree that it isn't really necessary, but it can be helpful one harder difficulties. I would say I use a mic on gold like 15% of the time and never run into issues. I haven't tried platinum, but have seen videos and can imagine why a mic would be handy there.
Edit: I have no problems plugging it in if needed.

Maybe on platinum it's needed more so. I wouldn't know I play with 2 other friends in a party and the 4th guy usually seems to work along with us just fine, we just have the advantage of dead players calling out to others what they see around them but its not that big a deal or that common.

I have beaten many, many gold games with completely mute randoms... many of the counter arguments I have received seem to have more to do with skill, rather than the benefits of having a mic.
I agree, pointing out turrets and other dangers is useful, but I trust in my own awareness of the game's happenings more than some kid with a mic.

For my first 400ish hours of ME3, I never used a mic. I didn't even own one.

Well if you're playing with people you know, a mic makes things a lot easier. A big part of success in any game is just knowing what's happening where and if you're operating on the combined information of 4 people rather than just 1 your life is going to be a lot easier. Just knowing what everyone is doing, so you can make decisions about what needs to be done and what is already taken care of or so you can be aware of problems occurring off your screen can be a huge help.
That said, I play mostly in pugs. I literally leave every single game in which I hear someone talking over the mic because my experience over the hundreds of games I have played is that 90% of what I hear from pugs over the mics is A) completely pointless banter that has nothing to do with the game
some guy burping/singing/having a conversation with his mother that doesn't seem to understand his mic is on C) whining about enemies, teammates, kill stealing, etc or D) hate speech/profanities. Never trust strangers in a video game to not be stupid.

I find (at least for me3), if you need to communicate through the mic, you tend to have lower situational awareness skills. Even on platinum you don't need them with decent players.

It can be easier to make decisions like "Which base do you prefer, which enemy do you guys want to play" etc. Also to talk about best class or weapons for a more cohesive team setup. But generally speaking it isn't necessary- but I prefer if people are playing on Gold or Platinum that they have a mic.
The real problem is when people just act like people and are incredibly impertinent or bullying and rude. I will confess, I'm impertinent occasionally
. But MAN sometimes even with my many XBL friends I feel like saying STFU THERE IS A PHANTOM TRYING TO GIVE ME THE KISS OF DEATH..NO WAIT THERE ARE TWO STOP TRYING TO BE WITTY
