I thought about this too... I think if you cross-bred rottweilers with pitbulls over several generations, and bred particularly for size, intelligence, and muscle mass, you'd get as close to a mabari as is possible in the real world.

You buy a pure bred mabari for like 800 euro only to find out it wont "imprint" you and either runs away or bites your throat off.

I thought it looked like a brindle rottweiler myself...but if you want a dog smart enough to do what the mabari supposedly do...you need a border collie.
My border collie opens and closes doors on command, fetches cats by herding them in a tight circle, turns light switches on and off, unscrews coke bottle caps for fun, and understands the names for each of her toys and will bring the correct one. She could school serious darkspawn butt.
