^my slayer tanking guide on gold

You forgot a key part which is to hold down a directional key  after the third melee, but before the charge.  Doing this ensures you will clip the end of the melee animation and charge instantly.

This video literally showcases the fitness part of the OPs guide ^^  Also teaches how with what buttons to press and when to press them!

(my channel also has a platinum run, but i obviously don't tank as cavalierly)

Nice video, I was just wondering, how would pressing the directional button correlate to console?  Do you mean just hold the *joystick* for looking around in one direction?  so it'd be like B+B+B(light melee)+RS (right joystick forward?) +Y (charge)?  thanks.

Slayer's charge needs damage immunity like the other Vanguards have. Tired of losing my shields when charging engineers and their turret blows up.

I normally do not like Biotic classes but Slayer is the exception. People may hate on me for this I did not spec biotic charge, instead i speced Biotic Slash and Phase Disruptor. I found both to be very effective.

I assume the damage reduction with light melee also applies to the Shadow?

No. You may get a damage reduction, but it's nothing compared to the damage reduction the Slayer has while meleeing.

If you stand still (Don't move the analog stick) and then do the melee combo, it won't continue on forever. Eventually, after around 4 sword swings, he'll resheathe his sword. You WANT this to happen. After the combo ends (Right before he sheathes his sword) you want to THEN start moving the analog stick and simultaneously trying to biotic charge into something. Moving will cancel out the sword sheathing animation, and allow you to charge into a new target with minimal time between when the damage reduction stops, so you won't get dropped if you're surrounded by enemies.

Fitness: Melee damage, Martial Artist,

So why do Martial Artist if you never do heavy melee?

I use heavy melee all the time, but mostly AFTER I have taken down most of the mob first. You actually don't want to kill things in the mob too quickly with normal melee, as the damage reduction seems to drop off if you're not hitting the target (especially if you're not host). If you can kill the last of the mob with a heavy melee, then take on the harder target (a Prime for example), that 75% martial artist bonus turns it into metal shavings within seconds.

I use almost exactly the same build as OP, but if I take a Scorpion (ULM and melee stunner) the Slayer becomes crowd control as well a true vanguard. The build forces you to attack constantly, there is no let up and hardly any downtime in fighting.
You do get A LOT of complaints from team mates though, as you occasionally have to use their kill as a bio charge to get your barriers back and sometimes you just cannot sit on an escort mission and get shot up, you have to charge out before you go down. I guess people don't understand how squishy Slayers are when idle.
On the other hand, you can easily get over 100 kills with this build in every game, so it's not like you're not doing your part for the team as long as you are constantly controlling crowds and bogging them down in close combat.

Best character in the game for me and definitely the most fun to play because of the constant judgement calls you have to make in regards to how to use your barrier and picking your next charge target. Shame about having to always host to use him properly though.

I just got carried throughout a whole game as a Slayer!!! :"( Gosh, I really don't know what to do with this guy.

I tried the melee thing, but the tracking is really unreliable. Most of the time I end up striking a wall instead. And Phase Disruptor is really awkward to use, no wonder people spam Biotic Slash.

I was excited to unlock the Slayer, yet he was nothing but disappointing.
Phase Disruptor is a horrible power, because it is a long range attack yet you need to regain your shields, possibly using Biotic Charge, to keep using it often.
The melee never connects for me, as I always miss the target

I never read the OP because it was all cluttered and spaced out, so if he made a point as to why it is good, then I'm sorry I missed it.

Oh and Phase Disruptor doesn't even detonate biotics. How lame is that??? There's no reason to pick it over Biotic Slash.

 To OP:

Awesome Post Sir... I noticed the Invincible light melee the very first time I played the character. He is almost more of a powerhouse then the KroGuard. I just wish one of my buddies would read this post. He talks nothing but trash on this character do to the tracking issues he has. I dont mind the tracking issues, they tend not to bug me very much. Also he is very reliable for taking down Phantoms on Gold just like the Shadow. Shadow and Slayer working together would be an Unstoppable force.

The only thing I did different then you was I scrapped PD and put it all on Biotic Slash... It works great when teaming up with a Justicar. But I am now thinking a rebuild yet again and trying the PD... Maybe I can get it to work this time around...

Did you ever think that vanguards want our kills we work for rather then just hand them over to some glass pistol adept... It may be a team effort but you can still jack the gratification of seeing KILL +714 on your screen...

I have a weird love/hate thing with the slayer right now. My main problem is that almost EVERYTHING you do takes up barriers. Combat rolls (teleport), melee, and the god awful phase disruptor. I was excited for that phase disruptor until I quickly realized the dmg output along with the barrier drain and the manual aiming makes it more of a hindrance than anything else.
I've since respec'd him and although better, he's still waaaaay too squishy IMO. Granted you cant have a tanking biotic ninja powerhouse, but there's gotta be some balance to it.
That being said, the slayer class is TONS of fun to play on silver since you don't have to worry about getting murdered in 2-3 hits.

I made a topic with a question I had but since this one probably gets more traffic - is there a lag for Phase Disruptor if you're not host?

there is, and even when your the host you can still miss with it on moderate ranges, as the animation has to kick in first. unlike with auto aimed skills. way too many cons for this skill against the pros for me to consider using it. not to mention i can slash people through walls, so why bother :P

I still think it's only silver viable. He's survivable, but it's highly situational. If charge refuses to tick, or you don't have an enemy to charge, or you get staggered (and he does get staggered, A LOT) then it's a death sentence.

In fact, you can't even pause to revive a teammate literally lying at your feet, because the moment you do you're sacrificing your DR. Even at full shields and health with a Cyclonic Mod III and a Shield Booster V, you won't survive the few seconds needed to revive someone.

I also tried using Hydraulic Joints V and a Strength Booster III with a melee stunner V and even then, he simply doesn't do enough damage to stay alive.

I fully agree about the reviving teammates problem. But that's true for nearly all the Vanguards. For example the moment you stop your constant Charge / Nova dance (as I call it), you get downed pretty quickly. The shields usually are not strong enough to withstand the fire of many enemies and I hate nothing more than dying in the open battlefield just because I failed at trying to revive a squadmate.

The only exception being the Kroguard. When I am playing him with shield boosters, I can take my time to revive someone even in if he is lying the middle of the enemy crowd and then charge the next best enemy to recharge my shields.

But I like this thread. I was looking for some ideas to get the new N7 Slayer into real action (and not just fiddling around with him on Silver) and I think I got some great ideas here. Thanks to you for posting your effective playstyles!

I like him, but he's a vangaurd. And being a vangaurd requires one to be the host of the match, other wise you'll be floating above the map after your teammate revived you or your charge won't work when you absolutely need it. But he's still cool nonetheless.

I will say the same thing I say in most of these types of threads:

Just because you're making the most of something, and doing well with it, does not make it 'good.' While I respect people for playing what they want and being unique, you can't just say something is awesome because it works.

Put a soccer mom in an F1 car and an Andretti in a minivan. I bet the minivan wins. Doesn't make it better.

I will give the OP credit for not saying what other 'N7 slayer is awesome' threads have said...'spam electric slash through walls.' Dudes, it's shockwave with a charge-up time. When someone says that, I have to assume they've never tried most of the adepts.

+1

I went with this melee build of my own accord the moment I got the slayer (skipped biotic slash), and I likewise only used heavy melee to teleport through walls/up ladders.

I still think it's only silver viable. He's survivable, but it's highly situational. If charge refuses to tick, or you don't have an enemy to charge, or you get staggered (and he does get staggered, A LOT) then it's a death sentence.

This. It's a fun alternative to sword fight the whole game, but beyond silver this build is to inflexible. Once you start your sword dance you can't stop it until all enemies that can see you are dead. This really keeps you from directly aiding team mates. Also the sword dance is a liability with banshees around.

On staggers: one stagger is often survivable. Two is a death sentence. Do not fight Brutes with any backup. Stay away from Phantoms.
