I enjoyed the skyboxes. The landscapes themselves... Not so much. They were too barren and similar.

I remember finding this huge skull on a planet that was from an undiscovered species. I always loved that kind of stuff. I did not mine the similarity of the building or mines. That part actually seem one of the more real parts of the game to me. Remote bases on isolated planets will more than likely use prefabricated buildings that look very similar.

BTW, I am doing a new ME1 play through right now and just finished saving Dr Michel from Fist’s thugs. Awesome moment between Garrus and Shepard.
After Garrus does and incredible headshot to the thug holding Dr Michel:
Shepard: “You took him down clean.”
Garrus: “Sometimes you get lucky…”
I love that scene…

Yeah some of the planets in ME1 had amazing scenery and just felt like there was this big galaxy out there for you to explore. At the same time I think they over-did it a bit as well, and the over-use of the same two generic buildings on UNC worlds didn't help.

Overall though I'd love to see it come back.

Why yes. Yes I did. I actually find the planetary exploration part fun. Despite the bases being reused and the limited geography we encountered, the exploration never gets old. I am always awestrucked by it when I go back and play. It's a shame that they removed it from the last two games :(

Yes, I loved the scenery and vast openness of the landscapes (even though it took a long time to drive around it all).

I got chills the first time I saw this scene, I always stop there and enjoy the sight for a little bit.

The view of the earth from  the Moon in ME 1 always reminds me of the Earthrise shot from Apollo 8 B)

The mako was great......the exploration was simply amazing. I am currently playing through I think my 6 or 7 run through me1 and those uncharted worlds are still enjoyable. Something I think people and developers underrated.

There was hardly anything to explore. Every planet had maybe a single bunker and a crashed probe somewhere. Some of them looked cool, but most were pretty bland.

I am replaying this right now, and doing every single exploration there is to the game, and yes I definitely love this. I love the Mako, for action it was a bit clumsy but the rest was fine. Really wish they would have upgraded this instead of just deleting it, or maybe reduce them a bit but not terminate! And since the 3rd game was a return to Alliance I was hoping a return of the Mako but I guess not :/ Would love a Mako replica as well, just saying.

i couldn't agree with you more , this is exactly why i play Mass Effect 1 at least 2 times per year ever since it came out. there is nothing that makes me feel more close to my dream (which is space) than this game's ability to put me on alien planets with alien skies and atmospheres.
Mass Effect 1 is Art for me , more than a game.

Yes yes and YES! how's that for a game , giving you a little mistery that furthermore adds to the quality and brilliance of an amazing storyline put together beautifully. When i found that skeleton myself for the first time it was an amazing experience simply for the fact that even if the game's timestamp puts you in the future where everyone knows everyone and everything more or less protheans , there is still room for more and if you can find a planet with a completely new alien just by wandering around , makes you think what's out there , what else sits somewhere in the sand/snow/rock on a far-away planet just waiting to be discovered.
The Fist scene was always one of my favourites , remember how you simply find him in ME 2 in the club blaming you for his downfall? I sure saw it coming :)

Here's hoping that if BW puts out more Sci-Fi games in the future, they will have a--reasonable amount of exploration. Uncharted worlds.

More detailed and varied landscapes to travel through on planets..(oh, it makes me giddy just thinking about it). Along with the beautiful skyboxes they had in ME1.

Also, some camps/villages/cities...something. Even if it's just a mini-hub. something a bit ore than probes and minerals.....and thresher maws.

Omg, those threshers scared the heck outta me first time I played. I'm just cruising along, enjoying the view..then RAWR! SCREECH! SCREECH! RAWR! Rumble, rumble ground.

Me: Aaaaaahhhhhh! What the hell is that?!? Aaaaaahhhhh it's hawking toxic goobers at me!
Wait......I think it's gone. Do you think it's gone? I think it's gone.....No! It's not gone! It's right under us! Nooooooo....! *critical mission failure*

Good times.

Lol. yeah, I got very paranoid about driving through large open areas after that.

I do hope they bring ME1 style exploration back in any future games. With some upgrades to the idea.

Maybe throw in a cavern, or two. Something to discover about the planet. A mini-hub where I can pick up some ultra rare loot only available on that planet. Weapons. Armour. Upgrades.

I was looking at the pics in this thread, and it makes me a bit misty eyed.

Ah the moment where paranoia gets you after meeting a tresher maw :D been there, i was so affraid to even try and move the mako , and then there was this bug i encountered on an ice planet , well .. dunno if it was ment to be there or it was a bug actually , my mako got cought in the winds and drifted off from one side to the other of the planet spining in the air like crazy, and that happened right after i killed this nasty thresher maw lol.
As soon as i get home from work tomorrow i will play me1 again  ,simply for the fact that i have seen this thread and pics within and because i haven;t played it in about 3 months now.
Good to know there are other people who think of the same thing and who enjoy a good mako run on an alien planet.

No, because most of the time was spent like this,

Or this,

Or this,

But mostly just this,

Plus the wonder wore off when I realized that every planet was exactly the same, stupid mountians and baren wastelands that make it hard to traverse and devoid of interesting things.

The scenicness just doesn't justify the anger and frustration that comes with the mako, Id just google "pretty space scenery" if I wanted to admire the stupid poorly digitized sights.

Yep, although the Mako sucked, I loved these missions.
