My god yes. I didn't fall in love with Mass Effect until I stepped out of the Mako for the first time on an uncharted world - it was such a fantastic and immersive experience.

I loath however decided to remove space exploration from the series.

Yes, yes indeed. Just my Shep, the camera panning for a great panorama shot, and enjoy whatever may rush through someones mind.
Definitely one of the aspects that made ME1 the beauty it is.
Quite a pity BioWare never evolved and iterated on the 'Uncharted Worlds' theme.
I think Overlord was nearly perfect in that regard. But they never expanded on it again as part of the core experience.
So BioWare, we obviously would love to see more of it ... again. ;)

Nope, never. Then again, the game never looked as good on my X360 as they do on the pictures in this thread, which are really quite beautiful. Also, I kinda hated the exploration bits, so I preferred to get the job done and go home.

I know a lot of people disliked the Mako or the cookie-cutter mission types on the uncharted worlds. But I really loved that sense of isolation and being out in some corner of space that very few, or no people had ever been before. I actually used to find the highest peaks on these worlds and just look at the scenery. I loved those moments, because it's the only time I've been intrigued by the exploration of other worlds.  ME2 had some great locales for the side missions, but I really disliked the firebase method used in 3.  Nothing touched the uncharted worlds in my opinion, though.

I understand why they were removed in ME2 and 3, but to this day, it's one of the things that keeps ME1 special to me.

Absolutely. On Bring Down the Sky, I would park the mako on the backside, and smoke a cigarette while watching the horizon.

Hehe, I could play those side missions in about 20mins average, most of the time it takes 30-45mins just because I go messing around with Mako and climbing highest peaks in those maps. I would like to take screenies aswell, but my ME 1 is on xbox 360 and can't take good quality pics sadly.

Still do that when playing the first game. Then leap off the highest point I can find.

Sure did :) I used to get out of the Mako and stare at the big blue sun while listening to some space ambient. Good times. Wish they would include this in future games. It's one of the things that in my mind made ME1 superior to 2 and 3. It just created an atmosphere and a feel that none of the other games managed to top.

Yeah, it's what helped Make Mass Effect 1 unique and believable and vast.

Too bad they dropped such a promising and interesting gameplay/narrative concept in lieu of planet scanning and violent fetch quests.

Yea. My fondest memories of mass effect are the uncharted planets. The moons in the sky. Sniping bad guys from cliff tops.

Only project overlord came close in ME2.... Too bad you could get out o the Hammerhead.
I really wish they'd bring this back in ME2. I don't understand how this got cut, so many of us loved this feature

Not on every planet. But there were often times I found myself mesmerized by alien skies. Though all the mako driving did get a little old in ME1, I do miss being able to land on a planet and just explore.

What I miss is sniping a mercenary camp from a kilometer away on the top of a mountain.

Really ME2 and 3 ? Using sniper rifles in close combat ?

I originally purchased Mass Effect because I heard it was a space exploration game.  I loved the make and the uncharted planets.  All of the little side quest in Mass Effect had a unique story that I enjoyed playing and finding out about.

I never found the mako to be that irritating to control, but I do play on PC and have heard that the controls are different for it than on the Xbox360.

I hope in future DLC Bioware adds some exploration elements back into the game.

Things like this though will always be a part of what I like and remember about the Mass Effect universe.

My steam screenshots folder is full of stuff like this.  Flycam is great fun in all three games.

Too bad that they forgot this kind of magic ind ME 2 and 3.

Krakefer.ch you are so much spot on - sniping those mercs gave me a kick.

The worst thing is ... I do know which planet that is just by looking at a picture of the scenery. Now that I haven't played ME1 for a little why it wouldn't be by name specifically, but I could prolly point you to it via the Galaxy Map with about 90% accuracy.

Now I want to play ME1 again. Miss the Mako :(

See what ME has come down too. I miss moments like these. (Maybe put my Shepard and Liara kissing in one of these scenery)

ME1: a pure, open world RPG
ME2: a shooter with RPG elements
ME3: a shooter with even less RPG elements.

I loved the Mako, but I understand they removed it because it was rather disliked.

I'm fairly critical of some of the things Bioware did with ME3, but this is one of the things that I sympathize with them somewhat on. After ME1, they heard fan complaints about the Mako. They remove it... And they get fan complaints about how it's not there anymore.

Nevertheless, as I said, I loved the Mako, personally, and wish they had kept it in ME2 and ME3.

I still love to go Treshermaw hunting. The Mako runs circles around them.

But the thing that still gets to me everytime is the music on the Citadel when you're on the viewpoint in the Wards and you're looking at the Ascension floating past. Goosebumps.

There were some pretty awesome locales in ME1. It was quite soothing to just drive aimlessly for 10 mins.

Yes! I love this aspect of ME1! So much better than the mineral scanning in ME2 or the infernal war asset scanning in ME3.

I loved the exploration in me1 , the planets and landscape were pretty detailed and I loved just looking up at stars and planets.

Too many idiots complained about the mako and one of the best feature was removed.
