Thats the thing. The exploration aspect needed tweaking, instead bioware killed it and then set it to fire. The appeal of space and sci fi in general is the vastness, the feeling of scale. Sadly this was lacking from me2 and 3. Shooting galleries is not what sci fi is about.
Me1 you could find a advantage to snipe enemies from far etc. Now we stuck in galleries. The magic of space, uniqueness and a sense of wonder were lost.

Question: can anyone translate into plain language what amount of memory/disc space/etc.. that would have to be added to include ME1's exploration into ME3? I know cutscenes take up a large amount of disc space, so I wonder how many mins of cutscenes could have been dropped in favor of exploration on a scale like ME1? Just curious.

the more i play the new games the more i hate cutscenes. They take away gameplay for cinematics. Soon we wont even play our games just watch them. T_T

I agree.  This issue has come up often on the BSN and resulted in some spirited debates.  I won't go as far as to say cutscenes are a 'lazy' way to tell a story, but I do have great appreciation for those games that find ways to convey story through gameplay and scenery.

A quick glance at the PC files for the uncharted planets shows that they are 1.29 GB in size.  That is just all of the uncharted planets maps, not things like the mako, your squad, ect.

For reference it looks like Noveria is 578 MB and Virmire is 530 MB.  This is just my guess looking at the folder names.  This is also based on the assets in ME1, very few of these exsist in ME3 and would have to be redone, probably with  more disc space required.

I loooooved the exploration and isolation on the planets in ME1! Such variety and beauty, I miss it!

This is one of the reasons I still think ME1 was the best experience. Sure, it had a lot of bugs and glitches, but, the immersion is what does it. You can really feel like you're on some random planet that no one knows about, and the quiet is an amazing experience. Planets with storms and stuff were also cool. I'd sometimes leave it on just to hear those sounds. They relaxed me. Sadly ME2 and ME3 did not offer this experience anymore. Although they did shine in other aspects, this should be one of the things they should aspire to bring back.

Ooh yes despite the Mako + Terrain I loved those side worlds. This game was inspired by Starflight, which through fractal mathematics generated 800 such planets to explore, or at least orbit (if they didn't support life/safe landings). Mass Effect 1 reminded me of the feelings I had exploring that huge galaxy. Of course, ME1 didn't have a galaxy near the size but as time goes on it seems worlds/galaxies get smaller. A big downside of 3D graphics imo.

There was a certain bit of serenity to the Mako missions that was missing from ME2 and 3. Had they improved the physics (or simply the Mako technology preventing the bouncing-balloon effect) I'd have welcomed them to the 2nd and 3rd games with open arms.

Much more satisfying than the "Eavesdropping" fetch quests with no Journal help in ME3.

I really enjoyed the visuals that Bioware created for all the different worlds in ME1. I do think the Mako missions sometimes broke the flow of the story (mainly in the later part of the game), but it was worth it for the sense of exploration it provided.
