Hi, I tried searching the forums but couldn't get any results. I have PhysX CPU with the X and CPU in green in the top left of my screen and it will not go away. Also my video card supports PhysX. I have an 8800 GT

Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, select 3d Settings on the toolbar, then untick Show Physx Indicator.

I wonder for what they actually (ab)use PhysX, as I haven't seen very much physics so far.

Me neither to be honest. I don't think it's used really. If it had been we'd see swaying hair and cloth which is not pre-animated but reacting to wind and movement.

It's used for spell and particle effects

I have 2 Nvidia 295s for Quad SLI. Plus I have an older PhysX card. I tell nvidia NOT to use the GPUs for Physx then tell the Physx control panel to use the Aegia PhysX card. Telling the control panel to use a GPU as a Phyx card should ONLY be done if you haev a DEDICATED GPU to Physx.. otherwise it will slow down your graphics processing power, and since this game CAN use 4 CPUs, even if you lack a PhysX card or dedicated GPU for PhysX, then just tell it to use the CPU (if you have a quad core or i7)

I go to my nvidia control panel--but have no option to untick Show Physx Indicator....

You need to first select "Set PhysX configuration" from the left menu:

Thanks for the info, I was sick of looking at that.

Unless you're running at constant 100% cpuload. Then you can better let the gpu take care of it. (running core2duo @ 3ghz here, and both core are constantly maxed.)

I have a GTX-260 as my main card, and an 8800GT that I have set to use for PhysX in the control panel, but when I have the display shown, it always shows CPU in Dragon Age. It doesn't really bother me if it's not using it, since the game runs perfectly anyway. I'm just not sure if it's actually using the CPU as the display says, or if it's using the GPU as the control panel is set to.Cambion Daystar wrote...

It would be cool if hair and beards would use PhysX rather than being solid. It's annoying watching dwarves talk. Their beards clip through their armor.

2Everyone: DAO uses CPU-based PhysX, NOT GPU.... why did they choose not to let everyone use either option, I don't know, but I guess it has something to do with compatibility or/and with PhysX implementation.
You see, they use PhysX pretty much - for arrows, particle effects, and possibly for something else. I guess, they did't find a way to properly implement both CPU and GPU based PhysX support. And they couldn't go the way of Batman: Arkham Asylum (with the possibility of not using PhysX at all) - because the game without PhysX wouldn't simply run....
I still hope they will bring hardware PhysX support sometime later (after they get rid of alll the bugs!), but I won't complain if they won't do it.

I agree.
However it would be fine by me if the release a sequel next year with some updated graphics and better physx support
To be honest, i would already be very happy if they released a new single player campaign.

Why the heck does the game force me to have this useless NVIDIA PhysX software installed in order to play? The game obviously does not need this to run since I don't have an NVIDIA video card and the settings are forced into No Acceleration. Yet if I try to remove the NVIDIA PhysX software, the game will not launch.

The physx software is a general physics calculation framework. it can delegate work to cpu, gpu or ppu, like the developers want it and hardware present. It's not just for nvidia cards, but also for ageia (ok, is now nvidia).

2Divide Overflow, It's not useless, the game can't run without it. You don't complain, you have to install DirectX or .Net Framework 3.5 for some games or soft... it's just another system soft, required for game to run properly.

So, the PhysX settings is displayed inaccurately or misleading then. "No acceleration" tells me it's not using my GPU or my CPU and isn't doing much of anything else for me. It won't even run any of the demos, hence my suggestion it was useless.

SO let me get this straight? This game does NOT do Physx on GPU? So no point beating myself up trying to make it work?

2Mr_Raider - DAO does NOT use GPU for PhysX acceleration, so you are right - there's no point in trying to make it otherwise.

OK, I'm having the physx>cpu on my screen problem but I dont have an option for disabling the visual indicator in my nvidia control panel, just disabling the GPU physx, which I dont want to do. Any suggestions?

It doesn't. At least not in my ngame.
I disabled Nvidia's physx, and my game now runs perfectly. In fact, doing so managed to fix a couple of graphics glitches I was having as well as making the game completely stable.

That doesn't sound right at all. The game is designed to use the CPU-based type of PhysX, no matter what GPU(s) you use. If you want, and have extra video slots, you can dedicate one nVIDIA GPU to PhysX, and another to the game, or get a PhysX add-in card from the surplus and used markets, to use that. Normally, however, PhysX will run silently in the backround, using the code that is written for CPUs.

Gorath, not to be an ass but, wasn't the max onboard memory on those Physx cards 128Mb?
and todays videocards run 512 or higher, this is where the physx part infuriates me........
I used to run SLI 8800's until I bought this GTX285, and I also have a 128Mb Aegia physx card, my issue was this.....with the aegia card in and running it actually slowed my system down,in such titles that utilized physx processing, where as if I ran the physx on either the sli'd 8800's or this 285, I was pleasantly surprised.
As for the rest of my specs PhenomIIX4 955(3.2Ghz), 8 gigs of 1066ram, M-audio 5.1 soundcard.
This isn't so much me asking for help, as it is more a personal query, as to why the physx card slows the system down.

Whether it accomplishes any improvement depends on the CPU power available by comparison. If you are way above the Recommended CPU Level, that "small" of a working space (128 MBs) is unlikely to assist. If you have a CPU closer to the minimum, the situation is likely to change.
