It was pretty much confirmed in the book "The Calling" that darkspawn are mindless beings with a hive like mentality. Very much like the Borg. The exception of course being The Architect, who was a villain anyway

I wonder what happened to The Architect, and Ulta(or whatever her name is). I was pretty sure they are the villians in the game when I read the book, but that turned out to not be the case :|

Its a good idea actually, the protagonist himself/herself is a darkspawn but not fully corrupted yet don't you know that?

Perhaps a mod is already in the works.

I could see 2 options of how to introduce darkspawns to the party without killing the story:

For once you could just summon/mind-control one as a mage (if you are really evil), or you could have someone join, who is in the progress of becoming a darkspawn, and rescue his mind through some magical intervention, leaving him in the body of a spawn, his mind close to collapsing to the brood, but still human enough to not kill and destroy in a violent rampage. Like what would happen, if Wynne would be infected? Will the spirit rescue her?

Unfortunately, this game is supposed to be a trilogy, and with two games left to go, there are also two potential blights still to come. Then again, DAO2 will hopefully still be called DAO2 (With some sort of following title - e.g. EA Customer Service and the sword of merciless pain and incompetence *shiver*), severely reducing the likelihood of another blight. Personally, I'm hoping for a large invasion by a new unstoppable force (perhaps the Qunari were fleeing something?), with a call to arms all over Thedas. Definitely hoping for the game to end in an Exalted March on the new enemies, because that would be so much more climactic than the ending of DAO1 (Cue the inspirational and pensively hopeful music).

Oops, that was kind of off topic. Anyway, I want as little Darkspawn interaction as possible - they're too cliche (WoT's Shadowspawn, LotR's Armies of Darkness etc.), and definitely NO darkspawn companions - assuming that was even possible.

Well Alistair can already make love with a Genlock, so there's no problem right?

When did they ever say that Dragon Age was supposed to be a trilogy?

I always thought of it as a franchise.

Damn so much hate for the darkspawn, they are indeed souless, but not mindless, especially the emmisaries. In the post above, I like the last idea you had there.

Bear in mind you might not be a grey warden in the next game, having a darkspawn companion might kill ya

pc: hey you!! hurlock join ma party!!!
Hurlock:gawr na rrrrrrraaaawwwrrr
PC: hey im talking to you...
(poke)
PC:Image IPB....

Also i doubt people would just ignore a darkspawn strolling around Val royeux or Kal sharok(assuming the next game is in that general area)

Noble woman: hey honey what is THAT thing!!!
Noble man: meh its just a hurlock out on a morning stroll, probably a tourist
Noble woman: he just ate the neighbours dog
Noble man: Thank the maker i was worried it have to listen to that thing barking for an eternity Image IPB

Oh yes, a darkspawn companion would be great. I would name him Smiley.

I hope the Qunari are the villains in the sequel. Time for another Exalted March!

This! The Qunari are set up though Sten to be the most logical choice for a threat in the next game. They're a much more complex threat than the Darkspawn.

The Darkspawn and the Blight are really very one dimensional, actually I'd say they're perfectly one dimensional. They don't have a society or a self, they're just a plauge that is unthinking and unfeeling, apart from the Archdemon. They have no actual goal, they just are what they are and do what they do, and are thus completely impervious to reasoning, deception, or negotiation.

Thus, we can have a Qunri like Sten and have them be the threat in the next game, but you can't have a Darkspawn ever be in your party.

Yes, having an Architect as a companion or NPC would be interesting, given the Blight will not be the villan. It could reveal more about what the darkspawn are and would eventually manipulate you to act towards his goal.

If the next one deals with a blight as well (possibly in Orlais, if Arl Foreshadow's notes are accurate), then I doubt we would see one. If one did join you it would be one of the more intelligent ones like the emissaries, or possibly one of the original darkspawn if they are still alive. Even then only if the Archdemon was planning to destroy the darkspawn when he was finished or something like that. It would have to have a rational reason to join with you as opposed to an emotional one.

That said, I'm not too keen on a Darkspawn teamate. I'd rather see an abomination or demon/undead.

Putting another blight in DA2 wouldnt make sense because blights only happen every couple of ages.i can't see there being a darkspawn companion in the next game or any after that.

It's the darkspawn blood that makes you say such things.

I disagree with the idea that Darkspawn are completely mindless. Instinct alone does not allow for the complicated military strategies they employ, nor for their ability to craft weaponry and build machinery. They are servants to the archdemon and are compelled to dig for one between blights but they obviously have some level of autonomy.

But they are irredeemably evil and completely dedicated to their objective of spreading the blight across Thedas. They have no motivation beyond that and it is silly to suggest one would ever ally with a player character.

darkspawn are obviously Balrog rip-offs from Lord of the Rings, they represent the purest of evil in humanoid form

Can you imagine just trying to walk through Denerim with a companion darkspawn?!
