Remember that all the Circles did was take a vote to leave. The templars attacked thereafter.

True, but what pushed them to rebellion was the crackdown in the Circles. Remember that rebellion caught fire when each Circle heard about Anders' actions in Kirkwall and his name became a rallying cry. The mage numbers are pretty decently depleted by the time they come together at Cumberland, if I'm remembering correctly.

Anders name becomes a rallying cry? Well what a downer if "educated" mages feel that way! That is just stupid!

Let's hail the human abomination for killing a priest! That almost the same if we hailed Anders Behring Brevik for his actions in Norway!

Anders won't be a rallying cry, Kirkwall was mostly for naught as Asunder is what triggered the separation.

Indeed, according to Asunder, supposedly the mages met at Cumberland but did not vote to separate until later, at least a year after what happened in Kirkwall.  A little ... anticlimactic, to say the least. :D Altho, according to Varric it was Hawke's name that was the supposed rallying cry.. *cough*cough*

But, back to brush's point, we could get a little Veil ripping during the final days before the separation; the Circle at Dairsmuid in Rivain was annulled. And, honestly, after what I read in Asunder, the White Spire seems like a likely spot as well--I mean why hasn't the Veil rent there yet?? (heh heh, or has it...?)

Most of the Circles are abandoned tho, once the mages go rogue. In my head canon, the templars keep the Towers for prisoners of war or loyalist mages, since it's not like they're going to give up the privilege of magic working for their side. So maybe bad things still could happen there...

that's the problem when you make novels canon it downgrades the games in my opinion only like 5 % of the players will actually read those novels blizzard has a terrible habit of explaining 90 % of their lore in novels that a majority of their player base don't actually read if it's not in a codex in game then it don't matter as far as I'm concerned I'm sure Asunder is a decent book or whatever it is but as far as I'm concerned if it's not explained in game its little better then a fan fic

but I'm sure they will recon heavily seems like bioware can't be consistent this days .... cough swtor cough

Yeah, and the Dairsmuid circle is the only confirmed annulment we have. But by the end of "Asunder" we know that each circle is reportedly in chaos with mages rising up and Templars working to put them down.

I hate to necropost, but there's been some new speculation just come up on the topic.

According to one of the forumites who's taken (or claimed to take, I won't try to convince anyone it's for real) one of the leaked DAIII surveys, this is the general description of the next game, translated into English from German:

""A portal between the worlds unleashes hords of demons in the land, civil wars rip apart nations and the corruption is limitless. Someone is behind the shadows, drawing the threads which destroy the world. Time has come for the Inquisition.

Take the Inquisitor's cloak and lead the only force able of bringing light into the darkness. Choose the direct method and gather your armies, send spies into the shadows or engage in a political war, make friends and use your connections indirectly: it is up to you how you lead the inquisition. But you'll have to take lead of it from the beginning. Make your player a rogue, warrior or mage and set up your crew from up to ten (!) complex companions to lead them against those who attack you by systematically spying on, revealing and destroying them."

What do you guys think? Similar to our topic, no?

Reason #398: they can open unrestrained portals to hell?

Just don't let gearbox make the end boss, it'll be another giant worm coming through the portal.

It's actually quite similar ,BrushYourTeeth.

I never thought of the veil tearing being an ultimate danger.
Like something mostly caused by huge battle like between the Imperium and the elves.
And that it would take a lot of time before it would be a pressing matter.
Guess i was wrong. :D

I kind of don't know how i feel about it , it's pretty much a Blight coming from the sky.
Spirit and demons don't have much lore , I mean except for a few verse in the chant of light.
Demons never been big talker , and spirit , well , Justice didn't seem to have a clue about anything.

Now thinking about it we have ennemies coming from the ground , and from the skies and people stuck in the middle.
Taint coming from the fade hurt the earth , magic coming from thedas hurt the fade ...
Maybe i'm onto something....a brand new crazy theory !

LOL - someone else thought of that too?
Maybe we should get aperture portal guns and travel through the Fade to blow up the Black City? Image IPB

@Reznore57 - you are SO right!

Darkspawn tunneling below, Fade portals opening up above... MAN Thedas is in bad shape.

So if this premise for the game is even close to true, we'll be facing a monumental threat that could destroy the world again. Kind of like in DA:O. Good thing/bad thing?

Sandal will probably save us all.  Image IPB

What lunatic stole a Warhammer 40K plotline and swapped the words around to fit DA?

I know, right? That guy just can't keep the fibers of this world together!

Good thing we can simply repair Fade tears by stabbing them, eh?  Image IPB

We know that the Fade becomes thin and weakened (sometimes even ripping open) in places where great amounts of mortal suffering take place.

Like at a Kanye West concert or a screening of Waterworld?

I have not heard of this.  Shall I assume it is NOT a sequal to the 9th Kingdom?

The 10th Kingdom is a play on fairy tales. A young waitress whose life ambition is to fly under the radar and remain unnoticed and her bumbling father get sucked into a world ful of 9 kingdoms. Each Kingdom represents another fairy tale. Some goofy trolls found their way into New York City, where she and her father lived, and planted a flag to claim it, calling it the 10th Kingdom.

I frankly don't like the idea of "everyone becoming a mage" or "mages being the future". Not at all.
It seems so unoriginal.

In the day of age of politicla correctnes or human rights, stories that feature a minority with powers has only 2 direction it could go: StatusQuo or everyone becomes like the minority.
I'd like - just once, just for the sake of difference - see a story that has a different conclusion.
I know it won't happen. End of all mutants/mages would be seen as a call to genocide or crap like that.

I personally think that the best would be that the mage/templar fighting would end up with both sides so damaged that it is impossible to keep the war on the big scale and both groups becomes pariahs hostile to each other in the society, just like the dales.

You cannot kill all mages, because new mages will always be born, and no matter what method of tracking you set up, some parent will always suceed in hiding their child, thus mages, apostate and the like will always exist. You cannot convince the templars to make peace with the mages because they think they have a maker given right to control them and is too afraid.

All becomes magical is just lame, so is the unite to take down a common enemy, because da:o already proved that a grudges and social stigma outlast the common danger and flames up as soon as there is a moment of peace.

I guess I could live with the veil shattered, og tears of whatever the veil does as long as it involves not all becoming mages.

Well, if ME3 is any idication, "syntehsis.." or everyone becoming mages..is a distinct possiblility.

And making peace between templars and mages to unleash them against a bigger threat...Geez, I wonder where did I hear that before?

Every fantasy-rpg that features two groups fighting. There are always a bigger treath they can agree needs killing, and then they just forgoet they hate each other. The making peace to fight the bigger thing (or the qunari) are the most likely thing happining. I just feel it would be unrealistic and cheap.

Actually the only thing, I would accept would be the both armies gets damaged so hard that they can't fight each other directly and is reduced to pariah-groups that will continue to fight each other in the background for the rest of the dragon age. But I know that most people prefer a solution to the fight, but I just don't...

If playing a mage was the only option, who here wants to play as a shackled mage as shown in Kirkwall?

(As the question states, the only other option than playing a mage is not to play. Make a choice based on the question.)
