Well, if ME3 is any idication, "syntehsis.." or everyone becoming mages..is a distinct possiblility.

And making peace between templars and mages to unleash them against a bigger threat...Geez, I wonder where did I hear that before?

Synthesis?  I'm reminded of a certain Sandal prophecy.

I'm hoping that was a kind of Easter Egg hinting at ME3 instead of anything happening in the next Dragon Age.

I'm going to do the worst kind of trolling, the kind that might mess with the games you all know and love. I'm now a supporter of synthesis and synthesis related endings for DA3.
Synthesis ftw!!

Thread necromancy!

I would love it if it turns out that the Maker is not, in fact, a god in the form of a consciousness, but simply a creative force, now known as magic. That could be tied into the hints that magic is going to return to Thedas somehow. The only other great power that has been "absent" from the world for some time is the Maker himself. It could also explain why magic is portrayed as the opposite of darkness in Sandal's Prophecy.

This could also give credibility to the idea that Andraste was an exceptionally powerful mage. But rather than this stripping her of her title as the Maker's chosen, perhaps it merely means that she was very deeply connected to the creative force of the world.

Perhaps this basic creative force made the world come into being, and gave rise to consciousness in the form of "gods". I'd like to tie in the Dalish gods somehow as well. Perhaps "The Forgotten Ones" spoken of in Dalish lore are, in fact, the Old Gods. They were then somehow sealed away below the earth in the form of dragons (or maybe they were always dragons). And maybe the benevolent dalish deities were sealed away beyond the veil. And then if Flemeth were Fen'harel, and somehow responsible for the creation of the veil as well as the departure of the "Maker", I'd be rather pleased.

Perhaps the Old Gods were trying to destroy the veil and bring magic back into the world when they sent the Tevinter Magisters into the Golden/Black City. If they had, in fact, been completely sealed away from magic themselves, that might explain why they would send worshippers to perform such an important task, rather than just doing it themselves. I don't exactly know why the city would have become corrupted, though, and I have a feeling that that's an important piece of the puzzle.

And lastly, perhaps the risk that the veil might tear completely open is not quite as horrible as it might sound. Perhaps that is precisely what needs to happen. Perhaps the mages are sort of saving the world, and every second bringing it closer to its absent maker.

It could also, be argued, I suppose, that magic is somehow sentient. Lyrium "sings", and I seem to remember a story where it actually guided a bunch of dwarves into a horde of darkspawn in order to protect Orzammar (I think, so don't quote me on that). Lyrium, seems to be a physical manifestation of magic as far as I can tell, and if it is sentient on some level, then maybe the same can be said for magic as a whole. Perhaps it is not only a creative force, but somehow a thinking one as well. That might possibly give even more credibility to the idea that magic is the Maker.

Sorry if I have repeated ideas that have already been mentioned in this thread. I haven't read all of it, and when I start typing it's kind of hard to stop. :P
Also, feel free to point out any mistakes in my theory. I'm sure that there are many. These are just random thoughts, and not exactly a well-researched piece of text.

This thread has some great ideas, so I'm doing my best to revive it as well.

I think it would be best if it were brought to the DA3 section. It would be seen by a lot more people and would attract some attention to bring some new life to the discussion.

There are a lot of compelling things being discussed.
