Suprised no one made one of these yet.

The opening cerimonies were not as spectacular as Bejing but it was still great. I had no idea Baseball/softball was removed from the games.

And Mike Phelps is a hometown boy so I am hoping he does us proud. Maryland might be a small state but we are proud (and big fat jerks).

For the medal count http://www.london201...ls/medal-count/

The queen parachuting. That was amazing.

I liked the bit with Rowan Atkinson too.

This is the first time I'm watching the Olympics away from the US and the coverage where I am in horrendous. Their athletes are entered in only a few sports (archery, swimming, etc.) and so their highlights are a bit lackluster, not to mention the horrendous MC who keeps breathing into the mic.

Rant aside, I thought the opening ceremony was a bit... moody? Not the word I want exactly, but the first thing that comes to mind. I found the history portion a bit grim and the culture portion (the one with the mother and son going into the house, a bunch of dancers, etc.) to be very disorganized and confusing. It was just too much going on at once.

It was nice to see J.K Rowling, though.  Also Atkinson, Craig, and the Queen in the parachute bit was LOL.

All in all, I was more impressed with Beijing... but I don't think anyone can beat their display. That was just awe inspiring.

The Olympic opening fest was weak. I only like the industrial theme at the beginning and the last huge flame at the end.

I'm going to watch gymnastics, martial games, soccer and ping-pong.

I personally thought that the opening ceremony was brilliant!

Beijing was visually spectacular, and there was no way we could compete with that. Ours was meant to be thought provoking, thematic and humorous which I thought it achieved brilliantly. I had a French family friend round and had to literally explain everything, foreigners had difficulty in understanding it. But here about 99% of reception has been good, it just got a bit lost in translation.

As to events, I'm going down to see the Judo and Badminton next week and I'm looking forward to it! The Football has been terrible so far and I hate the fact that we (England, Wales, Scotland) have entered as Great Britain. It didn;t even feel like I was watching a football match, it was full of people who don't usually go to football so there was no atmosphere watsoever, it shouldn't even be an olympic sport.

I think the opening was pretty good.
Now if they'll stop focusing on the boring sports like cycling and show me something actually interesting then I may pay more attention.

Watched the Men's Road Race. One of the better events in my opinion. This year it was a good one!

In fairness most people don't get english humor and likely were like "what in the hell is this".

You love it but you don't care about it? That bus stop must be feeling mighty confused.=]

Bloody foreigners, they don't like it up'em!

I tried watching the Brazil - Egypt game, the atmosphere in that was kind of dead too, so watching it was an odd experience. I did like the bare bones presentation on the BBC Olympics channel though. There was no arsing about, just a match, some commentary and at half time just highlights with none of the waffling. It was very refreshing. I agree though, there shouldn't be any football at the Olympics.

I can understand it because when ever they show the football matches the stadium is dead.

The city bike race came out good. I love to see some underdog stealing a gold medal like that.

I have not checked it out but they are supposed to have some feeds on the internet. For me I have to hop between half a dozen channels to see whats being shown. Caught the womens judo and some boxing. Pissed they stopped the boxing match part way thru to change to some football match in Texas.

Looks like Phelps is done. Anyways, not a huge fan of Olympic boxing (only game I would be intrested in), but I like seeing the results of which country has won gold. If you want, OP, you should do a little thing tracking what countries won the gold. Good idea, if you have the time. Baseball is really boring, just noting that.

I guess it's not accidental.  I seem to recall hearing that Tolkien intentionally created it as a sort of "British Epic" or words to that effect, and I've little doubt that the opening ceremony in turn took inspiration from it as one of the country's more infuential pieces of literature.

Well I kinda think that soccer is in the Olympics mostly because so much of the world plays it.  It's probably one of the most widespread sports in existence.  That's probably because it doesn't require much in the way of equipment, so just about anybody can play it, at any age.  But it isn't particularly athletic, compared to most of the other Olympic sports.  Baseball was likely removed because there weren't enough teams represented, or something like that.

Anyway, I usually don't bother watching the Olympics, though I will if someone else has them on the TV.  I typically just follow the medal count and look for any noteworthy events that happened.

I'm a huge fan of the gymnastics portion, followed by swimming, tennis, and athletics. I love how each movement has to be so precise.
