Okay, I've played Mass Effect countless times now - I'm addicted, I don't care - but something popped into my head this playthrough...

Saren is indoctrinated right, so the Reapers have direct access to his conciousness and whatnot, we also know that the Reapers indoctrinated any "absorbed" the collective consciousness of many of the Prothean race...yet Saren has to find the Cipher the unlock the Prothean message from Eden Prime...why did the Reapers not just use their stored knowledge of the Protheans to decipher it for him/themselves?

If you read the Mass Effect novels, Paul Grayson (human) knows how to pilot Turian ships because the Reapers share their knowledge of the Turian species (possibly gathered from Saren himself) with him.

I don't know, I know it would make for a very short and impossible game if correct, but is this a genuine plot-hole or is there someway it could be explained out?

Do the Reapers have access to the minds of indoctrination victims? I got the impression it was mind control, a one way process in which one individual follows orders of another rather than a two way process in which the other also has access to the individual's memories. I haven't read the books beyond plot summaries since they have a bit of a Star Wars EU feel about them (I hate the Star Wars EU) so whether it's a plot hole or not probably depends on whether you feel the books are canon.

The Cipher was a combined archive of memories, feelings and knowledge from the Protheans. Reapers can only access knowledge they hear from the member of different races, but they cant *feel* what it is to be a Prothean. The information in the beacons he sought was made for a Prothean mind.

Also, the reapers use the life essence, DNA and such, from a race to make new reapers. I dont think knowledge comes with it.

??? The beacon has just been found. Saren activated it. I do not see what purpose the Reapers could hold in this situation. I may be misunderstanding something here. Saren's job was not only to find out what the "rebel" "Unindoctrinated" Protheans beacon had in it,but alos to destroy it and anything to do with it. Hence the reason he plants the bombs. The Protheans also use senses like a telepathic ability. The Protheans who created these beacons,were indeed fighting the Reapers and trying to warn future races. They were not indoctrinated and these beacons and knowledge had been kept a secret from them.(Reapers) The Mu Relay has been lost,and found by the Rachni.

Also the Reapers did not "save" the Prothean race,they rather used them as slaves. No stored knowledge,just a lost species and culture. Something happened during the process and the Protheans were deemed unworthy of ascension.
