James is awesome. Kaidan is pretty cool. Jacob is good when I'm playing broShep (but not femShep).
So nope...don't feel the same way.
All starting male characters.

I hate Ashley and Kaiden with a fiery passion. **** them. They're really awful. And that's about it. Vega's alright. Jacob is cool.

I didn't like Kaidan much in the beginning with ME1. With ME2 he became one of my favorite characters cause he had the balls to question Shepard and not just blindly join. Sorry, I'd rather have friends who would call you out on doing something potentially dangerous/stupid as opposed to friends so loyal, they would follow you off that cliff.
Jacob I like for being the down to earth love interest for female Shepard. Almost zero angst going on. Then he apparently gets bored with Shepard and moved on to someone else. Now he's ruined for me.
Vega I'm just on the fence about. I don't hate him, I think he's a pretty interesting character and wasted potential for LI or at the very least a fling for femShep, but I would trade him to have any ME2 character back in a heartbeat.

Well, I like all three, 'though Kaidan and James are pretty much even.
Kaidan gets the bonus of being the first squadmate plus he's a good man. He's a professional, a tough soldier ('though it's better displayed in ME3) and someone you really enjoy to have in the squad. He's a bit more emotional than a normal man, but that's not a bad trait in my eyes. Maybe he's not "best buddy" material, but a close friend you can talk to about touchy topics you wouldn't touch with a best buddy.
I miss him ... can't leave Ash behind
James is quite the opposite of Kaidan. He's loud, brutish, a diehard motherf... you know. And someone you simply want to have around if things get ugly. In a way, James is a blend of Wrex, Ashley and paragade!Shepard. Ash and Wrex contribute the tough parts, paragade!Shepard makes James more human. An interesting character that's not stupid at all. His first appearance MAY be "typical stupid buff dude", but in hindsight, I'd say he's one of the more complex characters in the series.
And there's Jacob. I'm conflicted here. In ME2, he's the "normal dude" in the ragtag team of misfits. Besides some downer-lines in that game and the flawed romance, he's one of few hard-as-nails soldiers on board, without really big issues. That makes him looking boring in comparisson to the rest of the crew. But he's a good mainstay, he's trustworthy. Out of the bunch of people I'd trust, he's in the group with Garrus, Tali and Mordin.
That image of Jacob got a huge dent in ME3, especially for those who romanced him. For those who didn't romance him, his line about Shepard's only love (the Normandy) can be quite offending, especially if either Jacob witnessed a romance with another squadmate in ME2 OR if the current LI is standing right next to Shepard while that line comes up.
Well ... yeah. I don't dislike any of them, 'though Jacob is the one where I'm conflicted between "I like him" and "he has his ugly moments".

I like your comment regarding Kaidan. "He has the balls to call out Shepard". Ash does that too, but is hated by a lot of guys for that. I wonder why.
Whatever - I think, that's why I love Ashley and Kaidan in general: they DO have the guts to question Shepard. They don't follow him blindly. They act like humans would do ... 'nuff said.

Garrus just makes all the starter males obsolete.
As for Ashley, i won't go there. Exhausted by annoyance for her character.

I forgot they were on the ship after the first two hours. Cuz that's usually when Garrus shows up
