This is where we agree. I like his character. I'm not head of heels gaga over him. He exceeds and fails where he should.
However, "Hm... Wet Frocks." gets me every time.

I LOVE that line. I may have already unlocked the Duelest specialization, but I'll still try that with Isabella because that line is too funny.

I think Loghain deliberately left Cailan to die because of a combination of many things. There was the fight about Anora, Cailan's insistence of bringing in Orlesian help, and his fascination with the Grey Wardens. When Cailan was constantly "Grey Warden this, Grey Warden that" over the battlemap, it was the final straw that broke.
Maybe after Loghain left Cailan to die, he finally calmed down and regretted acting on impulse. But it was too late and he had to continue with his plans.
No. , Loghain could not have acted on impulse because it was better planned out than an impulse. A character with high cunning will point out to Alistair that there was no reason for the darkspawn to be in the tower unless they knew about the plan to begin with and were sent there. Arl Eamon was poisoned at Loghain's order a week before. And the Couslands were brought down (assumedly with Loghain's knowledge and consent seeing as Howe became his advisor) a couple of weeks prior as well.

QFT. Royal bastards are in a tenuous position. When there is no other heir, they need to be kept around to preserve the bloodline in case something unfortunate happens. But they can't be made too obvious so they are less likely to pose a danger to a later legitimate heir. Once there are a few possible heirs, it may be safer to remove them from the equation completely. Thus shuffling Alistair off to the Chantry and giving him the supposedly safe job to keep him out of harm's way.Sialater wrote...
Cailan knew about Alistair, I think, yes. But he sent Alistair to the tower because Alistair was his heir.
I don't think affection had anything to do with it.

Yeah, but that's at the Landmeet surely?
What I'm talking about is if you harden him while your still heading between Redcliffe/Circle Tower/Dalish and Orzammar as there is no difference (certainly none that I've seen with the exception of Isabella at the Pearl) between hard Alistair and flaccid Alistair.

Yes, but the fact that the tower was lit means he shouldn't have continued with his plans to abandon the Grey Wardens and then therefore his king.
Had Cailan lived, poisoning the Arl could have been explained away by blaming it on the now-deceased Jowan, after all, a known Blood Mage fugitive, AND he would have gotten rid of what he thought of as an Orlesian sympathizer. Plausible Deniablilty.

Exactly. I don't think it did either. Alistair was his heir, not the spare.

I dunno, I usually don't harden him until later (Props to whoever coined that phrase. "Hardened Leliana" just doesn't sound as .... dirty). I avoid Goldanna's because that woman is very high on my hate-o-meter. Some days I can't decide if I hate her more than Isolde or Anora. Or if I think all three of them need something done to them that I'm not sufficiently evil to think of.

Yeah, I don't ever play as a guy. It's just odd and uncomfortable. And I'm finding its still odd to play as anything other than a mage. (Not just in DA:O)

Think about what he said about Goldana before meeting her - he would hate if something happened and he never had the oppertunity - which is exactly what happened with Cailin.

You're right about there being essentially no difference BEFORE the Landsmeet, but your original post *did* mention the Landsmeet, where there is indeed different dialogue.
I'll completely admit that it's a fault of the game that we didn't see more of a difference between hardened/unhardened Alistair, and the fact that ONE response in one dialogue would change him was kind of...odd.
And as for his relationship with Cailan, I believe that Alistair's deepest desire, and his motivation through out the game, was to be part of a family, so even if he didn't admit it out loud, he did care when Cailan died.

You know, I'm sure it's not too farfetch for Alistair to have concern for Cailin. He had it for Goldana, why would Cailin be different? He may have also had some spite, jealousy, envy, but there was probably a little concern there somewhere.
Think about what he said about Goldana before meeting her - he would hate if something happened and he never had the oppertunity - which is exactly what happened with Cailin.
Which is probably WHY he says that about her.

That's the way I see it too. I just have a hard time believing that there was absolutely zero feelings between Cailan and Alistair. I know Cailan was trying to protect the only heir to the throne, but I think deep down they cared about each other, especially Alistair since he didn't have any real family left. Like the other person said, he goes on about Goldanna after Cailan died so I think maybe he was feeling remorseful at that point for not having the opportunity to know his own brother before he died.
