You know I really do have to wonder who coined that phrase...

But even when you harden him, it doesn't make much difference to the dialogue before the end of the game.

He's still a bumbling fool until then!

When I had Hardened Alistair duel Loghain and kill him, afterwards, when the PC is given a choice of who to put on the throne finally, he was definite that he wanted to be king, and that he would try to be a good king.  Maybe you just disliked him so much you ignored that?  People tend to see what they want to see...<_<

Oh, and, did I forget to mention that he has the most appealing voice and accent I have ever heard?
Everytime he speaks, no matter WHAT he says, I melt. I seriously just melt.
Sigh. I never leave him out of my party. NEVER. And risk missing that beautiful, velvety, smooth, sexy voice?

Well I was never too melted over Alistair, he is too whiny and dependant for my taste; but I started to seriously dislike him after my 6th or so game. Once you hear the good stuff 5 times all over you start to actually notice the bad stuff imo.
Hope you manage to keep yourself entusiastic over him, I couldnt.

I guess I can understand some of the love for him. His voice had me going, "Aw. He's cute." Outside of that, I want to smack him, hard.

I've beaten the game several times over and I still feel hella guilty when I see Alistar's sad puppy face. I've been known to mute the TV on some oocassions too because of his voice and how he says some things. I feel like the biggest jerk in the world.

His voice is beautiful, no doubt.  And he is adorable.  But his weakness, even when hardened, makes me so meh now.  But my first play through, I was in love with him, no doubt.  And he completely let me down (what a fantastic character that I had real emotional reactions to this).  I felt that my PC was WAY too good for him, and he was too clueless or weak to treasure the best thing he ever got.

But wow, that voice.  And yes, what he says just made me go mmmmmmmm !:innocent:

Wait, you hate boats, what's wrong with the stern?  It's kind of important.  How did a stern fit in there with Sten anyway?

Aw, I wasn't too thrilled about Sten at first, but beggars can't be choosers can they?

Actually it was quite an effort to get to know him and be friendly, especially compared to the others. I think that made it more rewarding in the end and I really liked him.

I do like Alistair and don't consider leaving him at camp ever. He's funny and charming but after several playthroughs he's not my first choice for romance anymore. He still sucks me in from time to time but his childish behavior at the end has lost it's luster for me. I still can't be mean to him though, which is interesting.

I'm going to try playing him hardened next time and see if he regains some ground

My husband can't stand him because he doesn't get to know him.  Meanwhile, I'm romancing him and even my husband has said, "Your Alistair says cooler things than mine."  So yeah.  He whines less if you're nice to him and not a grey or black PC.  He whines even less if you harden him after the Goldanna conversation.  (That sentence is all kinds of wrong on many many levels.)
