Haha, honestly, if you are going all out with a selfish/evil/jerk PC (and there's nothing wrong with that), there's no real reason to try to curry favor with Alistair.  If you do enjoy having high influence with all your party members, leave him in camp all the time, ply him with gifts, and have sympathetic conversations with him about how the Grey Wardens rock and Duncan was a great man.  That's pretty much the strategy I employed with Morrigan when I was playing a goody two shoes character and we were the best of friends.  All the good deeds I did when she wasn't around didn't seem to bother her, as long as I agreed with her worldview in our conversations, and kept giving her jewelry.

I absolutely adore Alistair Image IPB.  In fact almost every pixilated man Bioware has created from Carth to Kaidan and now Alistair I've had a shameless crush on  (my husband loves teasing me about my digital crushes, but I think he's just jealous).  But there's just something special about Alistair, maybe it's the voice or maybe it's because he's actually human and has flaws and insecurities like everyone else (unlike a certain paladin in NW2 who seemed to have the emotions of a brick wall).  In fact I have such an Alistair addiction that whenever I go into the fade all alone, I completely suffer from Alistair withdrawal and am counting the minutes until I can see his adorable hotness again Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB!

I admit the first time I played, I was crushed when he dumped my elf mage, but the second time after I hardened him he actually wanted to be king and wanted to stay in the relationship.  He really is a lot less whiney if you harden him, so for the people hating on him try playing it through that way next time and you will probably like him a lot more.  Plus keep in mind that he lost his friends and even his brother at Ostagar, for crying out loud, so a little crying over his friends is understandable and not exactly whining in my opinion anyway.

He only cared about his brother as an abstract, not as a person.  It's not like they were pals.  He cared more for the loss of his fellow Grey Wardens and Duncan than he did for Cailan.  However, as a King, he has to keep up that pretense so in his speech before the final battle, he calls it avenging Cailan, despite already lopping off Loghain's head. ;)  But I don't think he mourned Cailan as a person, just as a brother he never knew.

That is why I couldn't stand the NWN2 romance. He was a father like figure and that's bizzare.

My character's entire family got butchered and you don't see him whining.  :P

Alistair didn't know his brother, if you ask him about him he says he spoke to him once and it was inconsequential.  He seems to have some contempt for him too.

Heck, I have contempt for Cailan.  I know absolutely zilch about tactics, but his recitation of Loghain's plan screamed TRAP! to me.

Loghain's face screamed this is all a trap.  Seriously the way Alistair espouses about the gloriousness of Duncan, you'd expect he would have noticed what was going down.

How the hell did I put that in the quote.  I should pay more attention.

I realize that they weren't exactly friends (Alistair's dialogue with Wynne says it all), but still I think deep down it still troubles him that his brother was killed and that he never would get a chance to know him better.  I forget who said it, but somewhere it is mentioned that Cailan knew about Alistair and if you think back to the Ostagar scene right before the big battle Cailan specifically volunteers Alistair (and the new Gray Warden) for the job of lighting the signal in the tower, which to me implies that Cailan cared at least a little for his younger/older brother and wanted to keep him out of harm's way.  I think Alistair felt the same especially toward the end of the game when he realized that he could possible die as well in the end battle.  I don't think the speech where he mentions Cailan was just for morale, I think by that point he really meant it and was sad that his brother died before they got a chance to really know each other.

That's the way I saw it anyway.  I just think that in real life if you had a half-sibling you barely knew if anything was to happen to them I think you still couldn't help feeling a little sad about it Image IPB.

The only explanation I can see where Duncan not seeing Loghain's betrayal coming is concerned is that perhaps he was momentarily distracted (heck, maybe he was checking out my PC's "hindquarters") and not looking at Loghain's face.

But arguably, Loghain was aiming for the Grey Wardens. Cailan was accidental. BUT, once he knew Cailan insisted on staying with the Grey Wardens, he should have stuck to the plan and rescued his king. There were other ways to get rid of the Wardens.

I think Cailin wanted to keep his (unrecognized) heir alive.  I don't think caring had much to do with it as they didn't know each other at all.  Alistair thought it was Duncan's doing; he complained that Duncan kept him out of the fighting because of his birth.

I know seriously.  I was a goody-two-shoes girl and I ended up romancing Bishop every time (and we all know how that turned out, don't we Image IPB).  NWN2 and KOTOR 2 both had terrible romances in my opinion.  I mean after Carth how could they expect us to fall for Atton?

Cailan knew about Alistair, I think, yes.  But he sent Alistair to the tower because Alistair was his heir.

Prior to Ostagar, Duncan did.  The beginning of a Blight and all Alistair fought was ONE Darkspawn?  Duncan had the kid gloves out for our fair-haired boy, you betchya.

Shoutout to Bomfy my twin.

I think Loghain deliberately left Cailan to die because of a combination of many things. There was the fight about Anora, Cailan's insistence of bringing in Orlesian help, and his fascination with the Grey Wardens. When Cailan was constantly "Grey Warden this, Grey Warden that" over the battlemap, it was the final straw that broke.

Maybe after Loghain left Cailan to die, he finally calmed down and regretted acting on impulse. But it was too late and he had to continue with his plans.

But even when you harden  him, it doesn't make much difference to the dialogue before the end of the game.

He's still a bumbling fool until then!

When I had Hardened Alistair duel Loghain and kill him, afterwards, when the PC is given a choice of who to put on the throne finally, he was definite that he wanted to be king, and that he would try to be a good king.  Maybe you just disliked him so much you ignored that?  People tend to see what they want to see...<_<

I said that Alistair is still the same before the end of the game (landsmeet onwards) regardless if you've hardened him or not.

"Cailan brought his death on himself."  This is said to his daughter, Cailan's wife.  He wrote Cailan off when Cailan insisted on staying with the Grey Wardens.

I know it wasn't Bioware, neither was NWN2 (both Obsidion). But both games' predecessors were done by Bioware so that's why I mentioned those.  Anyway, I just personally couldn't warm up to Atton.  I think the guys had better romance options in that game anyway.  At least it looked that way when my husband was "learning combat  techniques" from a half-naked handmaiden Image IPB

Anyway off topic, sorry.  Back to Alistair love. Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

Actually, I played with him both ways.  Unhardened, I got a lot of conversations about how he didn't want to do it, pretty please with sugar on top don't make me.  Hardened, I got one conversation: it's my responsibility, Anora sucks, gimme that crown.

And no, I like Alistair, but I'm hardly a gushing "fangirl." I just happen to like flawed characters.
