The Phaeston *sounds* cool. I will give it that.

I discuss your logic - I bet you play silver, go play some gold, you'll see how much the Phaeston fails there.

I do play Silver because I don't wan't to spend my time fighting unfair enemies (Damn you Phantoms and Shield Gate) and sitting behind a piece of sheet metal.

fixed? and the enemies aren't unfair its just that you're not ready for gold.

Doesn't neccessarily mean that. You can do just fine on Gold, but you might not like the fact that you have to shoot the enemies a lot more for example. Silver might just have just the right balance to make the game "fun".

The Phaeston's good, especially on a Turian or Destroyer. It's better than 70% of the current assault rifle pool, which is more a testament to how bad the current rifles suck more than anything else. It's certainly better than the innaccurate-as-hell Revenant, utterly-worthless Geth Pulse Rifle, and usable-only-on-3-classes-effectively Striker.

In the current Metagame, the following are considered, by most veteran players, Gold-Viable:

Mattock
Saber
Harrier
Typhoon
Falcon

Conversely the following are considered usable, but only on certain builds:
Phaeston
Revenant
Striker
Particle Rifle

It is worth noting that of the rifles on this list, most of the ones in the Gold-Viable category are ultra-rares and more importantly, that a level one version of any of them is infinitely superior to most level X versions of other guns. Some examples:

* The Saber I does more damage in one shot than the Mattock X does in 4.
* The Harrier I does 1.5x more damage per-bullet than the Revenant X, and is dozens of times more accurate. It does over twice the damage of the Phaeston per-bullet.
* The Typhoon, weight aside, is infinitely better than the Revenant X in literally every category - Fire rate, damage, accuracy, clip size.

The overpowering majority of assault rifles in ME3 are utter, complete garbage on Gold and up. The Phaeston does, however, most-assuredly suck less than most. In a nutshell, here's the problem with every Rifle:

Avenger: Caster rifle; lower damage than most SMGs
Vindicator: Made irrelevant by existence of Hornet
Geth Pulse Rifle: Easily the single worst weapon in the entire game. Oh, and it's a rare, too, because that makes sense. Needs a massive DPS kick-up to be remotely effective.
Phaeston: Damage is too low; not a bad gun but far from the best
Mattock: First usable rifle on the entire class tree; get it and forget about all others until you get better equipment
Revenant: Almost powerful enough, but inaccurate as hell, rendering it utter garbage in the face of the better weapons
Falcon: Great weapon, mostly usable as a support unit; equip on the right class and go to town
Striker: Garbage unless used on a Human Soldier, Turian Soldier, or Devastator; inaccurate, poor firepower, and a Rare. Yay?
Collector Rifle: Decent, but needs buffs. Also good luck getting it above level one.
Saber: Possibly the best rifle in the game when maxed. Good luck getting it there. Still better than 90% of the rifles when maxed.
Harrier: AKA the only rifle that remotely matters for many players. The gold standard by which all rifles must be judged. Good luck upgrading it, because it's an Ultra-Rare.
Typhoon: Makes the Revenant irrelevant. Good times. Heavy as hell, though, and an ultra-rare.
Particle Rifle: Only good on a Destroyer, Turian Soldier, or Human Soldier, it relies heavily on a steady hand and skill. Also an ultra-rare, and needs enormous amounts of upgrading to be ideally effective.

So, yeah - Rifle category in general is ass. :(

If the phaeston floats your boat go for it, having used it on gold with my destroyer I have to say that I prefer the revenant.

Phaeston is fine on gold, it only sucks if you can't aim for the head. With ammo power it kills everything. It's nice for a silver card
In fact destroyer's avatar is holding it....

The Demolisher buff to belt feed the harrier makes this the best assault rifle. Non-stop death! Makes the typhoon look like a toy. Oh, wait, it isn't called belt feed, it's called pylon. Since the Demolisher only comes in female, I guess I'll have to add that the pylon finally makes the harrier practical for a lady's purse.

I use it with the Salarian Engineer and Turian Sentinel. It's a good gun, very versatile.

Sometimes I use it instead of the Mattock if I don't feel like clicking. It only starts to kill things fast enough on Gold/Plat if you toss on amps/ammo mods liberally.

Fires fast, plenty of ammo and reloads quickly and... easy to obtain. I like the Phaeston better than the Harrier even; I could eviscerate enemies with my Turian Soldier. Discuss my logic.

As per usual, there is none. "Best" and "useful" are not interchangeable.

Well, you can use Phaeston on Gold with at least three soldiers (Humans and Turian) and do just fine.

I use it on gold sometimes on my human soldier. I do just fine. It's certainly not the best AR in the game (Typhoon or Harrier) but it's acceptable up to and including Gold.

I like the Revenant. The Harrier eats ammo. Unless your sitting on an ammo box your empty in the first 30 seconds of a round. Not got the typhoon yet so I can't coment on that. As for the Saber. That gun is amazing. But not the best if your using the N7 Destroyer. For my the Revenant is the best for the Destroyer. (As I said not got the Typhoon so I don't know if that's better)

I quite like the phaeston on gold for my power classes. With amps and mods it puts out a respectable amount of dmg as long as your class synergy is there. The N7 Paladin works well with a combination of burst fire, power spam and melees.

Typhoon I makes the Revenant X pointless on the Destroyer.

I use it on my justicar. I get 190% cooldown even without the rank 6 assault rifle weight reduction. With reave and biotic sphere I get enough damage resistance to get the most out of it and when you pile on the mods and equipment it can dish out decent damage. I just started using it after they buffed it last and I'm happy with it.

It's definitely not the best gun for a weapons based class or a fragile caster. It's only real good for a class that can take a beating but needs a lightweight gun to keep their cooldowns short.

Me too... except when I'm farming on Platinum of course.

I like to use it on a turian soldier in silver from time to time, with AR amp III and AP/warp ammo III of course. It's a pretty reliable gun, just not very powerful.
I like the sound it makes too.

I dunno what the hate is for the Phaeston. Even though mine isn't X yet, I love using the Phaeston with my Turian Sentinel on Gold. It's light enough that I can still have +200% cooldown, it's got a lot of ammo, decent damage, it's pretty accurate.

Sure, there are more damaging Assault Rifles, but they weight a metric ton. For a Power-focused character, the Phaeston is amazing.

I've used it on Gold on my Destroyer. It's okay, but there are definitely better choices.
