This has probably be answered before, but because I always did loyalty missions I didn't think this was possible.

Can non-loyal squad members (i.e. you didn't do their loyalty missions) survive the suicide mission?

I figured it was automatic death if you didn't do their mission.

Anyone share examples of this happening to them?

non-"loyal" can survive holding the line :-
take the number of tough-characters (Garrus, Grunt and Zaeed) holding the line and double it
subtract number of fragile characters (Tali, Kasumi, Mordin and Jack) holding the line
If the number you're left is greater than zero then that's the number of non-"loyal" characters you can have in that group without anyone dying.

Miranda has plot armour and can survive anything except the end
Anyone else disloyal used in vents or second fireteam leader or escorting the crew will die
(a disloyal first fireteam leader or biotic causes someone else to die)
