If I didn't care or never heard of the franchise before, and if I was the sort of person who would not care about not starting from the beginning, ME3 would have been an amazing experience. I think I would've loved it dearly, and maybe even gone back and bougtht and played ME1 and ME2 to get the full experience.

As the final part of a trilogy, I feel it fails in almost every single way possible, though.

If you've followed the franchise feverishly for all these years, buying all the DLC (even the stupid ones like Pinnacle Station) and generally just looking forward to seeing the massive web of choice and consequence explode into a beautiful, intricate crecendo of intervowing plot points and ramifications for making decisions that would either lead to success or tragedy in the final chapter... well, it's a pretty huge letdown. We got a straightforward tale, with little to no variation in the plot.

I guess ME3 succeeded in what Bioware and EA wanted it to do.

It was to be a big, loud spectacle, perfect for new players to jump in to and start playing, and simultanously wet their appetite of the previous entries and the franchise.

It's only the ones who have been with the series since the beginning who are left scratching their heads.

This is why Bioware is correct about one thing they said, it is the best place to start the trilogy.
If I had to do it again I would not play ME3.

If they want to know how to end a trilogy they should take notes from Hannah Montana.

Agreed and we should have seen it coming when the PR guy told us it was great to start with.

If their going for Cinematic type games they should note that no movie director would announce that the last of a trilogy is the best place to come into the movie, nor would they have structured to create that idea.

As a stand alone first game you pick up sure its fine but as you have said not as it is.

My fanboyism and hype blinded me to the truth, but yeah, we should have seen it coming.

They introduced the Action Mode, and called it a perfect jumping on point, and I was honestly just 'Well, that's great! Now the CoD crowd can get in on my favourite franchise as well! The more the merrier, I say!'

The truth, that they actually catered the entire game to that crowd is a blow I might never recover from. It's like LoTR Return of the King turned into a pure action movie where Frodo started drop-kicking orcs.

and the sad part is all three modes have no real big difference

"ME3 is a GREAT stand-alone game"

Who the hell cares? At the end of the day it's not a stand alone game, and if you need to look at it that way to like it, it just proves how bad it is.

Even as a stand-alone game it's bad considering all things.

Started with Mass Effect 1 here.

Mass Effect 3 is now my favorite game.

Your point is invalid.

ME3 feels like Alien: Resurrection to me. ME1 and ME2 are like Alien and Aliens respectively - different games, but great on their own; ME3 gave me the same wtf moment I had when I saw the human/alien hybrid

I disagree completely. Without the stage setting taking place in the previous 2 games ME3 would not have had even a fraction of the emotional impact it had. Without the previous 2 games ME3 would have been boring and mediocre.

that because we played the first 2 games, new players who started with ME3 wouldn't feel that, which is why Bioware gave them the worst start to ME3

Too bad it has that pesky problem of being an end to a trilogy, no?

The OP is fine, I only have a problem with the title. Even a new fan can realize it's a bad game.

That is why there is still a knot in my stomach. That is why I'm stuck on my 2nd playthrough without any motivation to continue.

I'm 27, I've been gaming forever. Never has a game enarmoured me more than ME1. Never has a sequel annoyed me, and yet excited me more than ME2. Never has a conclusion to any game, movie, comic, book hurt and angered me more than ME3. It feels personal, because I care so damn much.

But there are plenty of people who prefer the Star Wars prequels to the old movies... that doesn't make them trolls, it just means they have a different opinion.

I vastly disagree with shepdog77's opinion, but I would never call it a 'wrong' opinion or a troll opinion. It's just a matter of preference.

I've been gaming for over 27 years myself (well, not continuously, kinda skipped the 90's) and I can honestly say ME3 was the most disappointing game I've ever encountered. Dunno if it's such a hot stand-alone title either, seems to lean heavily on 1 & 2 for emotional impact.

If you love how everything you did in the last 2 games gets thrown out the window at the end decision, instead of being tailored from all the previous choices and decisions to give you an ending based on how your trilogy run ended up. But wait, they needed to cater to new gamers and casual fans who don't care about story, and **** on the fans who've been here since day one. So we're just going to make a game where you can royally **** up the galaxy without the Reapers, but thats ok, the end decision totally retcons all that in a happy way!
