I also prefer medieval sword+sorcery over sci-fi, though I like both. I loved Mass Effect 1, but never got around to playing ME2 or ME3 because I prefer my rpgs with swords and magic, and the Dragon Age games, along with Skyrim have kept me busy.

All I need to know about DA3 is that it will come out...eventually. In the meantime, I'll happily remain occupied with Origins, DA2 and Skyrim.

ME 1 to me was the best. but really i dont play sci/fi games , in the ME ends i thought..here we go again another sad weird and  poor hero death...note to myself never broke your own rule about this kind of game again . lool.
Anyway  maybe ill do like you, play my dragon age ( origin and 2 ) games for second time and enjoy them.

If you weren't a fan (or potential fan)....would you be a customer? Surely in order for you to purchase something you have to either like the things that have come before or have a reasonably expectation that you're going to enjoy what you're buying?

Well I drive Opel but I am not a fan of the car factory either. Customer and fan do cross at times depending the target but they are not the same thing. If I would be fan I would also purchase all other related material like those books and miniatyre characters etc. So no, I am just a customer.

Skyrim slow?  Perhaps compared to Dragon Age, and it being heavily story driven and a more focused game.  Skyrim is an open world rpg, where you play the game as you see fit.  My character can be a warrior, rogue, mage or a bit of everything.  He can do the main quest or ignore it, raid dungeons, join guilds, or just spend his time picking flowers and hunting butterflies.  In Skyrim, I can lose myself in the game and easily accumulate 300+ hours of gametime played without realizing it.  If anything, I feel more like my Skyrim character is MY character, and an extension of me, much more than the Warden or Hawke.

When I feel like playing a more focused, story driven game, I play Dragon Age.  When I want to roleplay a character, and basically have an endless amount of things to do, I play Skyrim.

I found Skyrim fairly "slow." And I haven't finished it. I really should.

But - what you've said about rolyplaying here, and what Skyrim provides, is a pretty precious thing, in my mind. A friend (who I described how I was playing to) remarked that I was roleplaying my Skyrim character as "sad."

(Basically, she was always cowled, except in those really snowy bits, in which I removed her headgear - to feel the snow on her face -  and she did a lot of just running aimlessly through the forest and sitting quietly on chairs, looking at the view. I guess the story/questing wasn't pushing me, so I was just being.)

But, my point was, being able to organically roleplay as "sad" is a pretty great thing. (I think I'm horrendously OT, sorry. But, I guess it'd be cool if there was a bit more of this in DA. In DA2, Hawke was really a variation of him/herself. In Origins, I did think of myself roleplaying a scaredy-cat one time. I think it was an archer, but I can't recall why else I thought that ...)

I'm pretty sure he's talking about a fake mockup (to show how something that really only exists conceptually might work and look).

So even if it's not something that the game can currently do, you just fake it to make it look like it can (and if it later turns out that it won't ever work right, or it sucks and you have to take it out, well, oops).

Fair enough - I guess that makes sense. (But do game companies do that? An example doesn't really come to mind ...)

Molyneux is a pretty great designer/amazing guy.

I know you're replying to me replying about "over-hype" or whatever, but I still don't really get how this relates to the term, "demohack."

Like, does it mean "talking" about the game? To me, "demo" implies demonstration, either my hands on or theirs. (But I think I/we are probably overthinking it by now.)

It happens all the time. All those games that are still more than 6 months away from release yet get hyped at E3 and other shows? Most likely mock up video.

If you're on the Twitter, just ask Mike what he meant.

My guess is a demonstration. It's not talking about something or claiming things will be a certain way. It's something like the Diablo III reveal, where you see the siegebreaker smash through a wall and grab a guard, and bite the head off one of the player characters, with a long string of gore and awesome trailing behind. None of that is actually in the game (the siegebreaker is, don't worry, but the events are totally different); it was set up to be a cool demo.

Mike showed a picture at one of the conventions of Merrill equipping armor. Presumably this was going to be for the expansion, but I doubt it was final code (it may have ultimately changed, if it was even anything more than a Photoshop mockup). It wasn't necessarily working in the game at the time that image was shown (or working in exactly that way), but it let you see where they were headed.

It's hacked or faked functionality, for demonstration purposes. It makes you think something is set in stone, when the truth is that it's very much still a work in progress.

I´d rather wait and see something solid than speculate about some developer hype.

@devsin It's all good. I just find evolving words used to describe games interesting. :)

(That D3 thing is a good example. I'm generally fairly oblivious to hype, oddly enough, except the games I'm really hanging out for.)

Whatever you do, silence is much better than broken promises.

Please don't go the way of the Mass Effect team. I believe a big part of the rage with ME3 comes from the lies we heard

I agree with the approach, even though I'd like to hear about DA all the time. If I had to advise Mike, I'd say "Keep your mouth shut."

BioWare lately talks a better game than it plays. They need to change that.

Agreed.

And the abysmal PR Bioware did during this and endings controversy.

But if they give us new info our tears and frustrations will cease and then their coffee machine will run out of power! You can't make games without obscene amounts of caffine!
