I saved Ashley because she was on the AA Tower with the Salarians.

For me it was a choice between saving one man, or saving several lives. Also since Kaidan was babysitting the bomb, I figured with his tech abilities he'd be able to make sure it went off even if his position got overrun.

I liked both characters, and it boiled down to a purely tactical decision.

The Salarians survive as long as you do the four objectives on the way to the base.

The Salarians shouldn't survive if you go back for Kaidan, and Ashley is on the AA Tower. Perhaps they do in the game, but if so it doesn't make much sense.

At any rate it would be metagaming to save Kaidan in that instance just because you know the Salarians will survive even if you leave them.

Going into it unspoiled, there is no reason to expect that they would survive unless Shepard rescues them.

Ugh please no. I don't want to have to place Ashley at the bomb just to save Kirahee.

As for metagaming. My Shep saves Kaidan because the bomb must go off. I consider it either metagaming or a bad judgement call to save the person at the AA tower. (Granted the scene doesn't look so ridculous when Shep's fighting Saren). You know the Geth are swarming both areas. If you take the risk they have time to disarm the bomb you're wasting everyone's sacrifices up to that point.

Though that is true. Frankly I started assuming they get back on the ship once Shep takes out the AA guns Joker makes a quick grab for them (since unlike the Normandy crew they would be heavily exhausted and would need medical attention).

Kaiden surviving Virmire is not canon. The majority of fans chose to save Ashley. Therefore Ashely Williams is the canon survivor.

That's not how canon works.

On the other hand Kaidan would have been the strategic and more (militarily) logic choice to save. He is a) of higher rank and B) (at least according to the codex) one of the most powerful human biotics while ash is just a common soldier like a trillion others.
Which is why I personally think it's very illogical that she's made spectre. Kaidan instead again has the biotic thingy as well as his recent carreer going for him. (Biotic spec ops and such)

Besides, the choice of crewmates seems to suggest that the developers prefer Kaidan to have survived, since he's the only sentinel on the crew, whereas with Vega and Ash we have two soldiers.

If both had survived I'd see Kaidan where he's portraid in ME3 (Spectre, Major, Biotic spec ops leader) and Ashley probably as the leader of a squad or maybe in n7, but not a spectre.

For one, I would be fracking thrilled!!! I love both Kaidan and Ash and it would be great to have my two favorite Alliance Marines with me throughout the entire trilogy.

It would have been easy to have both survive Virmire, and have the same impact it had, while feeling the burden of command that Bioware was trying to push in this one decision. (Hell, it would be interesting if you could lose both of them on Virmire)

Bioware would probably put more effort into both characters (especially Ash) and each would have different story arcs, now both being alive in ME2 and 3. In ME2, one would remain on Horizon (I vote Kaidan, since it makes more sense for an officer and a tech expert to be there) and one is encountered during another event.

In ME3, both would be serving under Anderson when the Reapers hit. I hope Ash wouldn't be a Lt.Cmdr, but perhaps a 2nd or 1st Lt, serving as commander of the Marine detachment. Kaidan would be the same rank as Shepard, acting as second in command of the Normandy. During the game you could propose that one or the other becomes a Spectre during the game. I really hate the idea of losing one of them for an entire act of the game, but it could be that Shepard has to choose again, similar to Vimire, but only one of them gets injured. Totally cut out the coup (since that a stupid plot anyway, and only gives Ash/Kaidan haters a chance to kill them), or change it entirely.

Kaidan actually gets promoted to Major Alenko before ME3 (Possibly under Udina's influence as I see no way Ashley could realistically jump 5 ranks in 6 months). I see no reason why he wouldn't should Ash and Kaidan be alive.

I know he gets promoted to Major before ME3. It is so unrealistic (even for a sci-fi fictional story) for Ash to be a Lt.Cmdr by ME3. That is why I try to ignore it. I and a lot of others would be fine with her being a lieutenant. I am not saying that Kaidan himself needs to get demoted. However, by looking at the rank system, Kaidan outranks Shepard. So, in all rights, Kaidan should be in command of the Normandy, if we are just going by military ranks. I'm sure that would go over well with a lot of people.

The devil is in the details.
