Don't forget that Orana a Tevinter slave was brainwashed to the point where she sympathized more with her father's killer than him. With that i don't see the Imperium as a better alternative to the Qunari.Xilizhra wrote...
Only others who submit to the Qun. Those who don't are mindraped into brainless slavery. One can at least change one's position in Tevinter, though generally with difficulty.MisterJB wrote...
Can't I just destroy both?
If I had to pick the least of two evils...Qunari. At least they have a sense of compassion for others.

Nope, sounds and looks like brainwashing to me. -Xilizhra wrote...
What? She was clearly quite upset over her father's death, and only felt slightly sorry for Hadriana.

Whatever degree of conditioning exists there, it's not even close to what the qamek does. The Hierophant wrote...

Decimus, Hadriana, Orana and the numerous slavers from Tevinter, shows that the Tevinter are just as F*cked up as the Qunari. Just admit it that both factions are equally terrible.

Outside of the addition of the Black Divine, drastic loss of power due to the First Blight, the Qunari invasion and continued war with them, i see nothing that indicates the Imperium is changing it's ways. They still seem morally bankrupt as most of the characters from there are either slaves, slavers or sociopathic magisters.Xilizhra wrote...
Tevinter shows greater potential for change and greater opportunity for individual good than the Qun does.

From the wiki:
"The Tevinter Imperium is still governed by powerful magic-users through a form of magocracy. It is almost universally reviled by other nations. Its nobility is known to be over-indulgent, and slavery is still practiced. The Imperium is the center of the black market, smuggling (including the harboring of mage fugitives from other lands) and the slave trade. Tevinter would crumble without slaves, given that it is the only way to support their economy. History shows how deeply committed they are to the practice; when an archon once outlawed it [slavery], the archon was quickly assassinated. Though merely a shadow of its former glory, the Imperium is still a very powerful nation with considerable military might. It would turn on the southern nations were it not diverted by the constant wars with the Qunari."
"Duty is paramount in Qunari culture, and their society is seen as a living entity, whose wellbeing is the responsibility of all. Each person is like a drop of blood in the veins of the being, and they must do not what is best for them, but what is best for the creature."

To be fair I'm fairly sure somewhere it is stated that most of tevintars including the more morally acceptable tevintar really have no want to associate with the andrastian nations. Honestly though I can't blame them for chosing not to want to deal with nations who thanks to the chantry view them as the root of all evil and evil boogeymen/women who will steal away their children in the night to sacrafice to a demon. Tevintar is only really a few steps from being as isolated from the rest of Thedas as the qunari are.

Dragon Age is based on medieval history.
The qunarii ( Turks and Arabs) threaten to invade Thedas (Europe). Tevinter (Byzantine Empire) is fighting against them. But Orlais (Western Roman Empire) wants to expand their power so they launch Exalted Marches (Crusades) to supposedly combat the Qun. The real goal however is to weaken both the Qunari and the Tevinters so they can become more powerful. ( 4th Crusade)
What i understand is that the Qunari have some sense of honor but ultimately want to convert everyone to the Qun by force.
The white Divine are hypocrites who want expand their power by using Andraste and propaganda against mages, Tevinters, Qunarii, pretty much everyone...
As for Tevinter keep in mind that what we know of them is what the White Divine says about them. Maybe they are slavers but where do they get their slaves from? They're just bad at hiding slavery unlike the other countries. To me it's clear that the White Divine is using propaganda against Tevinter while also relying on them for protection against Qunari.
Those are the worst hypocrites. They would probably tranquilize every mage if it wasn't their excuse for keeping a powerful Templar army.
Besides Tevinter is proof that mages can live as normal men and perform great feats without becoming abominations.
To conclude: Tevinter > Qunari > Orlais (White Divine)
PS I want to play as a Tevinter magister (one of the good ones of course)!
