The indoctrination doesn't have to play out in real time. Just like dreams can seem long but occur in seconds. In fact Doomsday found a slowed down reaper horn during TIM scene. So the battle isn't necessarily raging in the background.
TIM is indoctrinated. It's a little more than eyebrow raising. All you're doing is calling it mostly bad writing in the name of coolness factor.
How does Anderson get on the citadel again? Why didn't he help Shepard? How is TIM controlling Anderson? Hand waving to be epic by Bioware? That's bad writing theory
If that scene is real Shepard is passed out. How is he going to activate anything?
That doesn't make sense on so many levels I don't know if I have the energy to explain it. In your scenario the Reapers don't want the crucible firing - just for starters:
Why is Harbinger turned into a total retard that...
1. Doesn't turn off the beam
2. Defends the beam by himself
3. Misses Shepard after bullseyeing everyone
4. Doesn't make sure he's dead
5. Leaves
6. Doesn't defend the beam against Anderson
You're point about starchild trying to trick Shepard into the wrong choice:
If it's a hallucination/indoctrination...
1. Shepard understands the controls even though he is hallucinating and passed out before reaching them?
2. That makes starchild pointless and powerless
I can't take it anymore. Your version makes no sense. It bounces between IT, literal, bad writing, space magic, hand waving, and things you invented
I'm sorry but there's just too much wrong here to explain it all.
But you basically ascribe more power to TIM then the Reapers.
You hand wave all the plot holes away during the beam run, about the crucibles design and options, the TIM scene, the available.decisions...that's saying it's only 95% bad writing.
Oh well
- Don't see why the timescale of the dream matters regarding what I've suggested
- Again not sure what TIM's indoctrination has to do with the point... I guess you could otherwise call it bad writing, I'm just saying they sacrificed a little realism for a more shocking, 'demonic' kind of ending
- I guess Anderson could have made it to the beam, I already admitted this did seem both resences seemed unlikely. And Anderson can't help Shepard, he is threatened and then dies before the final scene.
- What I meant was, Shep passes out but then comes to, only when she does "wake up", the hallucinations are much much stronger. The elevator is like a metaphor maybe for her mental state ascending to the point of understanding the Crucible on waking, but also being subjected to the indoctrination. In short, I think she/he's awake
- Sorry for draining your mental energy, that wan't the intention, I respect what you're saying and do want to understand all this better. About the Reaper firing, I assume Harbinger was just aiding in wiping out the frontal assault on the Citadel beam. I don't think it would want to turn the beam off because a fresh batch of dead humans are right there to be beamed. I think it'd assumed Shepard was dead, and even if not, that there was little threat from a few ground troops boarding the citadel, as opposed to a whole army (perhaps not realising that the true goal was to reach the Catalyst).
Anyway yeah, it's a shame that what I said comes across as a lazy hand wave, I tried my best to keep speculation out of it as much as possible and just relate what I thought while playing. There's no need for you to explain everything if you think what I said is dumb. Anyway I'll see if any of the WNT people have any similar thoughts if I can find a thread for that.

Basically, he's a mutant. lol
I'm saying this because I'm watching my boyfriend play through ME and now ME2 and there are references not just to Shepard being 'special' or 'great leader', but in fact that he has this unknown quality that makes even strangers pick him apart from the crowd. My quick two examples recently are:
-Kasumi, just 'knowing' that you are the real Shepard, even though he died. She mentions something about an 'aura' you give off
-the Worf krogan clone on Grunt's loyalty mission also mentions some interesting things, like Shepard even gives off a feeling to people in general, that isn't something unique to only a really really awesome person
It feels more like foreshadowing than just a way to say 'hey, Shepard just gives off that vibe of awesome to everything he meets. Just cuz''
I wouldn't be actually surprised if Sovereign realized your potential from the beginning, and had Saren take you on a wild goose chase in order to verify his suspicions. Virmire and Ilos is the final test, and succeeding those, Sovereign really wants you to join the Reapers. Of course, in ME1 if you refuse (and you do), there's not a lot lost, and the cycle can just continue.
But then ME2. Harbinger becomes VERY intrigued about you, and I don't think its just your personality or 'get things done' attitude.
BTW Shepard regards himself as just a soldier, but in my opinion, that's just to shield himself from the truth - that he is not just the galaxy's only hope, but even a very special individual down to his core. We're constantly illustrated this. It's just not EXPLAINED what makes him so uniquely special. Even the Lazarus Project remake doesn't count, because Harbinger wanted his body before that.
There's something core to him that is either genetically born into him, or happened to him at some point in ME1. I don't agree with the idea that Harbinger is obsessed over nothing in the end, because he's just a 'machine that can't understand determination and willpower like an organic' or whatever.
It's funny, because ever since ME1/ME2, I already had the thought that Shepard acted as an anti-Reaper himself, sometimes following the steps of Saren, but in a completely opposite way (in motivations, ethics, etc). It wouldn't shock me if there was something in him that Harbinger is VERY worried about popping up in future cycles, and he MUST understand it now before the Reapers get defeated sometime down the line.

One trait of great intelligence is being able to defer gratification in order to achieve greater success. That might be the case with the Reapers. What if all this is part of a grand scheme by them. All nice and all regarding Ilos and Vigil...
But the problem remains that this cycle only stands a chance because of Vigil and the disc he gave us. Without it we would have been unable to stop Sovereign, the Citadel would have been overwhelmed, the cycle would continue completely as usual.
Instead we defeat Sovereign and but the Galaxy 2.5 years to prepare and deny them easy acess to the Citadel putting their strategy of isolating the systems out of play.
There is no gain from the Reapers point of view which justifies the enormous losses and possible defeat because of that...
You almost make it sound like the Intelligence somehow predicted every possible outcome of every possible situation and manipulated events accordingly up through all 3 games...and that is a kind of villian I really, really hate <_<
No logical outcome, no logical explanation, hell there is not even a hint of something as grand as that...
The cycle has a chance of ending, the Reapers can be defeated for the first time since the start of the cycle according to everything we know and it was all set in motion because of sacrifice of the Protheans and the things Shepard did.
Sovereigns defeat and the events of the Citadel could ruin everything for the Intelligence and the Reapers...I simply dont beleive there is any foreseeable plan, even for a supercomputer, that is worth that risk.
The AI´s primary programming is the presevation of all life, Sovereign represented an entire species, for the Intelligence to willingly sacrifice Sovereign would be a direct violation of its primary programming from what we are told.
Losing something now and gaining more in the future is what deferred gratification is all about. Yes, I assume here that the Intelligence is evil and doesn't value life. But isn't that what everyone think about it already?
It'd be an enormous twist if at the end of the war everything changed because the Intelligence had planned it all along. Of course, it'd have to be obvious for the players that they were tricked into a trap and blindly followed the path the Intelligence drew.

So it both betrayed the Leviathans and is continuing on its programming. Problem is, it also incorporated the Leviathan arrogance and apex predator mindset, leading to it strongly manipulating organics instead of protecting them, and also mandating a form of indoctrination over every Reaper created after itself. (Which is why all Reapers behave as one in goal and in amorality - even though each are a 'nation')
"Protecting organics...while screwing them over for many millenia." Yup, sounds like Leviathan.
EDIT: Long story short, Reapers are still a sad abomination and need to be Destroyed. Their attempts at synthesis over time just create more and more failure, because their creators were failed from the start. AIs are NOT bad, but require guidance and compassion just like any growing mind, but the 'Intelligence' never had that, and sadly, we have to put it down before it wrecks even more trillions of lives.
So let's kill Harbinger.

That's not where that pic is from. That's one of the MP devs. He said he'd "eat his hat" if players could farm/solo/something or other platinum difficulty. Needless to say it took about 5 minutes after launch before some of the top tier players had just spanked platinum. Some of the forum held the hat thing against him, so he decided cupcakes were now called hats and uploaded a few pics of him eating cupcakes.
I'm guessing they were chocolate, but they should've been crow flavored.

I still think the Intelligence/'Catalyst' (the real Catalyst is Shepard imo) is just Harbinger. Or rather, it was an AI that became Harbinger once it synthesized with the Leviathan race.

That makes sense. When Harbinger was created the AI decided that it has to be mobile, not sitting in some remote facility, and uploaded itself into the most powerful Reaper of all.
I completely agree. I've said this before, but one possibility for an ending could be, the Crucible turns out to be a trap, a mass indoctrination device that uses the Mass Relays. After fighting our way onto it, we somehow "reverse" it, so it becomes a mass anti-indoctrination device.
Due to Shepard's success in beating indoctrination, he actually is the Catalyst. Everyone in the galaxy becomes un-indoctrinated, including all of the Reapers. Only Harbinger, the only being not under indoctrination, is left as the enemy. Cue epic finale battle with Harbinger!
Then comes all the little blue babies, houses on Rannoch, and all the other good ending stuff!
I also believe Rio will be important somehow, maybe we built our own Mass Relay, and it would get us to the Citadel, but I kept this version simple.
