Certainly, Starbinger is very similar to The Architect.

At the end, the illusion, of you being Shepard, is stripped back, you are yourself, these are the choices.
What do you choose? Not Shepard, there never was a Shepard. Shepard does not 'see' the results of her actions, she is gone. Your choice killed her. She did as you bade her to do. You made the choice, and after her death, you see how that plays out.

Brilliant!

Yeah, I think the best part of the whole final sequence is the bit where Shepard says "so the Illusive Man was right all along".  Because this really separates you from Shepard, as you could be persuaded into thinking that if Shepard says it, then it is true.  But this is the power of indoctrination manipulating her (your) mind.  I do think it's kind of awesome.  When I first heard that line, I was kind of stunned, disappointed, confused.  But having decided it was indoctrination and gone right ahead and killed the Reapers anyway, I look back on that line as one of the highlights of the whole series.  Just so good.  Aaargh I'm gushing.

Only on the surface/presentation level. Thematically, he's an AI ripped out of Asimov's works

Did any of you play KOTOR II?  Because the G0T0 character is also extremely similar to these characters.

Yup, it ain't exactly uncommon thing in Sci-Fi. Which is why I always laugh when people go all "omg, Catalyst is BS, nonsense, worst sci-fi idea ever, Bioware commited literacy crime!!!".

Nothing is ever 100 percent original these days. Some ideas are borrowed and then improved upon. Some would say that cell phones and such aren't completely original, but rather an improvement on the basic telephone that was created back in the 1800s. Just an example.

Ohh I'm not complaining that it ain't "100% original". I like Catalyst take on "AI is tasked with impossible goal and starts getting creative". I'm laughing how many people act as if Bioware was the first to do this and it was the worst idea ever

I was making an observation with things in general. Maybe not with the ending or whatever.

That may be, but his rigid logic and the situation of choice (of not being forced) is the same. Only the words have changed.

So, Bioware ripped off the Wachowskis. Apparently Matrix Reloaded was an inspiration too.

The idea of the Cycle might have occured to them after seeing that scene. Posted Image

That's what I think.

The difference is that the Wachowsky Bros. don't explore this idea in more detail in the Matrix trilogy. In ME we have Javik, a relic from the previous period. In the Matrix the Reapers' counterparts would be the Machines but they are helpless in their fight against Virus Smith. I doubt the Reapers would ask Shepard for help (but aren't they doing exactly that with the Catalyst?).

Guys wiat didn't the Catalyst say he made the Reapers, yet in Leviathan Harbinger makes the new Reapers, in his own image?

To be precise, not Harby but the Intelligence.

I wonder what would people choose if they were Commander Shepard and ME was real? With all the consequences of that choice on their and the Galaxy's lives.

No, Leviathan said that the catalyst made all other reapers in Harbinger's image, not that Harbinger made the reapers.

Knowing what's at stake if I fail?
Victory. At any cost. Any future is better than being turned into a reaper.

Yet Leviathan talks about Harbinger a lot.
We know that Harbinger is a Leviathan Reaper, and we know this AI wanted to find a problem that the Leviathans couldn't solve.
Yet if I was an AI, and wanted to further my search I would create a body of my own, and Harbinger let's him.

Also if he Control the Reapers, then he talked with us since ME1 ME2, and now ME3. He attacked the Citadel his home, and he was destroying it from the inside.

He could have ordered the Collectors to attack the Citadel, and they could have, yet something about Shepard made the Catalyst question his work, and humanity.

What I don't get is Nazar?

He talks about each Reaper being Independent, yet the Catalyst says other wise.
