The best ending to any game ever. Of all time.
Already the soundtrack makes this ending great. "Suicide Mission", one of the best tracks of the trilogy.
Everyone thinks it's "Suicide Mission", but it's actually "The End Run".
"Suicide Mission" plays on the floating platforms while travelling to the Proto-Reaper, which is also really epic!
Both so good. If the Suicide Mission track played during high EMS Destroy instead of that God-awful, depressing piano music it might almost make it bearable.
Almost.
Thing is, both ME1 and ME2 ended really well. In ME1, you've got a giant space battle raging whilst you work your way through the familiar but now deadly environs of the Citadel to the final confrontation with Saren. There's a cathartic fight followed by Shepard emerging bloody but triumphant from the rubble of the council chamber. There's the immediate consequences of your decision to save or sacrifice the council and your choice of Anderson or Udina to represent humanity on the council, and the promise of a greater story to come.
ME2 climaxes with the suicide mission where the fate of the companions, old friends and new, that you spent the game recruiting is decided. The horror of the reapers' true nature is revealed through the proto-reaper (I enjoyed it too), and a bad decision can mean the death of a beloved friend. Once again there is the catharsis of defeating the immediate threat and another decision to lead into the next chapter - to keep or destroy the reaper base. And oh how I love showing TIM my middle finger and suggesting that he rotate upon it. Then there's Arrival, which gives us essentially more of the same, with some neat gameplay besides. At this stage I was so pumped that I pre-ordered ME3. I almost never do this - I'm usually a "wait a year and get it cheap on Steam" sort, but ME1 and 2 were so good that I thought it was a pretty safe bet.
Now don't get me wrong - I admire the idea of trying to do something different with ME3's ending. I'm even down with the idea of the final fight being done through the dialogue wheel. And the ending (with EC) actually makes sense if you play through it with IT in mind. But ME3 needed a payoff to match ME1 and 2. Now I'm not talking about a bunnies riding unicorns farting rainbows while the reapers are turned into kittens ending here. I can handle a dark or tragic ending. The problem with 3 is that the emotional payoff is just not there and it isn't enough for the writers just to be clever. It's not like, say, The Usual Suspects, where there is all the evidence you need throughout the movie to figure out what was actually going on (took me about 3 viewings before I felt like I properly got it lol). Here, we have an incomplete picture and that bloody breath scene, and what feels like a broken promise from the devs.
IT-related tidbit - the Heretic Geth base in ME2 has an unusual and distinctive floor covering:

Non IT-related tidbit/tragically nerdy confession. Sometimes when I play ME games I have this in the background to make me feel awesome: youtu.be/HiRDJLcYua0.

I've gotta replay it again the next time I get the chance.

Dark Earth was one of those games that were ahead of its time but didn't sell very well. Another such game was Beyond Good&Evil from 2003.
I picked up the HD remake of Beyond Good and Evil on the PS3, it's a great game - very intelligently written and fantastic use of your camera as your weapon.

Yeah, and the artistic style of the graphics is it's hallmark. Overall, the game feels epic. It has an open ending and currently BG&E 2 is in development.Rankincountry wrote...

I think even a quick cutscene of Shepard being turned into a husk post synthesis and Garrus having to shoot him and then just dropping his rifle, heart broken, would have been powerful. Everything just falls apart and the crucible is destroyed.
Or an indoctrinated Shepard getting picked up then wreaking havoc. I have this image in my head of Shepard ordering joker to get close to the where the crucible docked, then walking into engineering, shooting everyone as Tali slowly raises her hands like "Shepard, what-" as he drops her too, before overloading the core and obliterating the Normandy and damaging the crucible beyond functioning.
Not that Arians script doesn't blow this idea away.
Indoctrinated Shepard probably would not go about shooting the Normandy crew. Reason why Harbinger didn't shoot down the Normandy was because an indoctrinated Shepard will need the Normandy and it's crew. Hopefully for the reapers once they have Shepard than can use him to indoctrinate the rest of the crew. If Shepard and friends can unite the galaxy imagine how much damage they can do working for the reapers.
How do we know that is what would happen? The reapers already showed us their evil plan:

*Shrugs* just a little "could be something, could be nothing" I noticed. Anything green and circuity? circuitryy? circuitish? curcuitous? tends to make me raise an eyebrow. Well, both eyebrows - I can't do that Roger Moore thing. I guess it's reaching a little bit to assume they'd synthesise their carpet. Meanwhile here's some vaguely related humour that's much funnier than anything I could come up with: youtu.be/_E0A_cC04Sc.

I agree entirely. I'm envious of those like the esteemed Bill Casey who are imaginative enough to fill in the gaps and be content with the endings as they are.Rankincountry wrote...

Sadly my imagination sucks and my Shepard is obstinately stuck in that bloody pile. I would love an epic conclusion like that of ME2 where either Shepard kicks Harbinger's ass in a mental landscape, or Shep fights his way to Harby's brain in the real world and blows him up from the inside. Or we go through the Citadel relay to dark space and kill the Intelligence on its own turf. Preferably all three in succession!
And I was also confident enough to pre-order. The Collector's Edition no less. Of which I have made precisely one complete, beginning-to-end play through. Money well spent.<_<

One thing i have just noticed replaying leviathan. There is a crssbreed plant in tges mineral works and a datapad that talks about it being a subtle bit very dangerous plant that would not arouse any suspicion in offices. Well a similiar lookimg plant is growing all over the presidium commons and other parts of the citadel. I'm not saying it is the same plant..but it certainly looks the same.
I know right?!? Why has no else body talked about this?

I don't know, but it is actually one of the best of ME 3, imho.
Together with "Extraction", "Ardat Yakshi Monastery" and "Sur'Kesh".
It reminds me of the original ME.

That poppy is all over the bloomin' place, in fact. Also, you may recall that Ambassador Udina supplied much of the flora used to redecorate the Presidium after it was rebuilt following Sovereign's attack. Speculations indeed.

The thing about them - you don't really do a loyalty mission for them. And in case of James and Kaidan, you don't even do the recruitment mission! (Ashley's recruitment is eden prime, and Liara's is Therum). You could argue, that Liara's loyalty is LotSB, and Kadan/Ashley loyalty is cerberus coup - which is REALLY stretching it. But James doesn't have even that! I'm really looking forward to that paragon lost series - maybe a ot of clues there (note how they didn't do it BEFORE the release of ME3 to hype the character).
