See, these are the questions I never really know for sure. If intelligence is the catalyst, what intelligence is it? Any intelligence? Reaper intelligence? Definitely there is suspicion that leviathan is hiding something but the reapers bend the truth as well. Indoctrination is bending the truth because they are turning you against yourself and your allies. That is bending the truth, your truth. Who the heck knows what the catalyst is at this point.
IT is that it is an indoctrination attempt. There is still a lot of uncertainty as to where it begins. It's so subtle that it could have started back in ME2 in Arrival when shepard was in the room with Object Rho. Or maybe the normandy ship had reaper tech on it in ME2 and that started it? Can't totally eliminate that one though it cannot be proven so personally I tend to stay away from that.
The thing about IT is that it changes how you view conversations and you start looking at all of it differently. As a player, if you are indoctrinated, you choose control or synthesis thinking they are these great options, but isn't it strange how even at the highest EMS shepard does not live whereas shepard does live when choosing destroy which is breaking out of the indoctrination process and not letting reapers take control of you, which is death of shepard in shepard's human form.
Doomsday Device has been gathering tons of in game quotes that support IT and destroy. Your whole crew supports destroy. Even EDI chooses nonfunctionality over letting the reapers live. So that is a statement against synthesis and control that comes from a synthetic life form. That's pretty telling.
It's all just a matter of looking at it and being willing to see what evidence there is and if you now at least think IT is plausable, likely or the truth of what is happening.

I personally think those who just write off the ending as rushed or bad aren't putting enough thought into it.
The simple minded focused on all the plot holes. The intelligent filled in the gaps using creative thinking, reasoning and logic.
Or something like that. I don't have my Retribution book in front of me.
I made a Synthesis video to basically drill in the idea to people's heads what this really represents. Using quotes from all three games. Some people might call me crazy or "grasping at straws", but it all fits.

We're collecting IT-supporting quotes in the IT group. (See link in my signature)
That includes anti-synthesis stuff, foreshadowing, etc.
Eventually I will categorize everything in one comprehensive list.
So if you have any good quotes that we don't have yet (and I know we're still missing stuff), please submit them there!

What you have to realize is that people like to not think and to be dumb. Look at how the media has dumbed down so much of everything. We have reality shows that pander to idiots. We have hero movies that are popcorn flicks at best with nothing intelligent in them, even theme-wise. We have dramas that barely are worth watching except every few years you get something amazing like The King's Speech, Inception, Black Swan... Some of the best TV shows are on cable. Mainstream has a whole lot of mediocre crap and some guilty pleasures. But intelligent TV is not there like it used to be and sadly, some of the most intelligent TV seems to be scifi, but scifi a decade ago like Star Trek Next Gen - lots of amazingly done themes. Voyager had some as did enterprise and deep space but by then it was less on themes.
I remember when Matrix was out and people loved it not just for the action but for the story which was very thought provoking on many levels. The action truly was great, so great everyone rips it off to his day, but the story is still one of the best ones out there.
Intelligent movies, TV, games are just rare and often, they are reduced to at face value. Even with something as provocative as The Matrix, there were still people who didn't get things that were pretty clearly stated. Of course, it lost a lot of its credibillity in 2 and 3 but the original was genius and yet, still lost on many people. Too many.
Maybe it's just that there are a lot of people that aren't that intelligent. They don't use their minds. They avoid using them and live on autopilot.
