Well it is mentioned that they prefer to use other species to do their work for them, and can control people from vast distances away. Thus suggesting either they don't like travelling, find it difficult, or can't. The latter is unlikely since the Reapers wouldn't have any difficulty finding them.

No. That doesn't suggest that they don't like treveling, find it difficult, or can't. That only suggests that they control people from vast distances away. Which is pretty amazing. They also can kill a reaper over a distance just with a thought. Which is also pretty amazing. And they also menaged to avoid being slauthered by the reapers all this time - which is amazing beyond anything. We just don't know what are they capable off. But we do know that once there was a time when they were benting the galaxy to their will - which could mean anything, but i doubt that they simply meant having a lot of thralles.

Yep. Another theme is the idea that the Reapers have stagnated the Galaxy's technological growth. They think they are perfect, and thus don't create anything new. They make it so all species develop along paths they desire, and will kill anyone long before they can possibly rival them.

Only way to break it is to remove the Reapers, and develop along your own path. Its the ultimate goal of the Geth, and should be the goal of everyone. Its even suggested the Salarians did something similar to the Krogan by uplifting them.

Krogan uplifting wasn't a major problem.

Using the uplifting as a method of Control was necessary against the Rachni.

...but like Control always does, it backfires. It was used BECUASE of Krogan birthrate, instead of to enlighten/assist the krogan into a full member of 'society'. Someone/everyone neglects the negative consequences and they pay for it.

To a degree.  However the point was who knows what the Krogan could have become if they weren't uplifted?

Same with the Yahg, though they will probably do better since they are considerably more intelligent then the average Krogan and are more likely to cooperate with each other.  And plot behind each other's backs to take charge.

Well, but 'uplifting', I do mean 'soft uplifting'.

Basically how the Prothians had to do it, not even how they intended to do it (just use the humans etc as part of their Empire, but they were forced to just abandon their tech when the Reapers arrived).

Leave some tech for the krogan, don't interfere, and if they accept it and even push forward with their own tech and cooperation within themselves, then welcome them to the galaxy.

The Salarians just uplifted the Krogan into fighting a war for them. Not exactly the best of starts.... by far.

God I hate Jacob.

However, talking to him at the hospital makes me wish we had a Crucible level/DLC, where we get to witness our Crucible-related war assets so far, a plot regarding the project, and certain reveals about the thing :P

Jacob: "That project is crazy, freaking huge. And all these brilliant minds are working night and day trying to figure it out. I wish you could see them, heads down, piecing it together. It's something to see."

Bioware loves us, they really do.

Well it suggests it to me. And considering their choice of habitation (or rather, their ability to live there) they appear to be aquatic lifeforms. Aquatic lifeforms with little to no ability to craft anything themselves (no hands, from what we saw), so they enthrall other species to do the job for them.

Maybe they force them to build huge ships to carry them around. But that would be a lot of effort when you could just get the thrall to go do it for you.

Leviathan does cause issues, indeed.

But you don't need the Reapers to defend yourselves from them. Maybe technology reverse-engineered from their corpses, or developed to counter Reaper Indoctrination (if it indeed works to prevent Enthrallment). But not Reapers. There's no forgiveness for them.

Edit:  Not to mention Leviathans don't seem to be able to travel through space very effectively.  Quarentine and destruction of any orbs would solve the problem pretty easily.

Exactly.

Reaper tech is still.. just tech.

Doesn't mean we should EVER adapt it as-they-stand.

But reverse engineering? Incorporating some general ideas about tech into our own? No problem. We see many positive examples of this in the major storyline and in the War Asset dialogue.

In fact, reverse engineering is one of the big things to get this galaxy to break the (tech) cycle itself. We'd be truly making it on our own then, instead of passively accepting Reaper tech, or thinking it is somehow sacred it in itself. (TIM is viewing the Reapers with awe by Thessia/Cerb-Base, thinking they're worthy of preservation and control.)

I generally lean towards destroying Reaper tech.  The risks of study are too high.  Indoctrination of course, but there's also this.

Shepard: What is it about the Collectors’ modifications that bothers you so much?

Mordin: Disrupts sociotechnological balance! All scientific advancement due to intelligence overcoming…compensating for limitations. Can’t carry a load, so invent wheel. Can’t catch food, so invent spear. Limitations. No limitations, no advancement. No advancement, culture stagnates. Works other way, too. Advancement before culture is ready…disastrous. Saw it with Krogan. Uplifted by salarians. Disastrous. Our fault.

Shepard: You blame the Salarians for what the Krogan did?

Mordin: Yes! Like giving nuclear weapons to cavemen. Krogan unprepared for spaceflight, technological advancement. Krogan could have evolved alone. Worked out aggression, been ready to use new tech responsibly. Instead Salarians came, disrupted Krogan culture, used Krogan as blunt instrument against Rachni. Short-sighted. Foolish.

Well that's why we can't FOCUS on Reaper tech as our path of advancement.

All the War Asset stuff around the Citadel seems to indicate that. A diverse and competing galaxy that incorporates certain aspects of Reaper tech, along with all of their own ideas (dark energy dissertation anyone?) into their designs can only prosper with it.

An organization that hoards and emphasizes the corruptive parts of Reaper tech will fall to pieces.

Also, has anyone else found that ME has ruined other games for them? I finally got around to playing Final Fantasy Dissidia 012, and I just can't take this crap seriously anymore. A horde of killer mannequins (yes, seriously) just doesn't measure up to the Reapers' villainy. I can't find a damn to give about them. And listening to Cloud's emo bull**** isn't a trillionth as deep as they probably think it is. Hardly as enlightening as that random Mordin conversation I just pasted. Damned bar is too high now.

I love how when Balak holds a gun on you in the Citadel and talks about the Leviathan of Dis indoctrinating his people, the music gets all spoooookyyyy.

They are just hiding there. You don't hide at home. That's the first place to look for you. Their abulity to live live there is pretty amazing also. And they are no aquatic. Should they be aquatic - finding them all would not be a problem. You just check all the planets with water (Duh).

No the water world we found them in - is the farthest possible place from their natural habitat.  It's a place that that's not even accured to reapers to look for them.

Have you seen the Inglorious Bastards? The opening?

I still enjoy FF9 and 12.

FF9 because of its whimsy and general fun for me... FF12 for the fact that I can completely ignore the story and just grind stuff.

To be fair, Dissidia 012 has a ****** poor plot even without games like Mass Effect setting the standard. Its one of the few games where I feel perfectly fine with ignoring the story and focusing on the action.

Not really other games, but such a long, indepth, and character driven story with so many interesting philosophies and ideas has made watching an average 2 hour movie feel like reading a 10 page children's book. Posted Image

Another thing I'll say about Dissidia is that they did a terrible job with their portrayal of many characters - particularly Cloud. There's many more facets to Cloud's personality in FF7 than Dissidia's brooding emo Cloud.

Whoa... way too many pages to catch up with.

I just wanted to say, I do think the modular theory is a valid possibility, but I think it will only support destroy, and not refuse.

For several reasons;

- Refuse wasn't in the original game, so that would mean the 'real ending' wouldn't have been in the game
- I think that (despite everything Shepard says) it simply means you don't even intend to destroy the Reapers any more after talking to the "catalyst". That's what you always wanted to do, and you just give up on it.

Just look back at Arrival. Shepard had no choice, she sacrificed the Batarians. Doing nothing, and letting the Reapers poor through, is letting everyone die anyway. And that is exactly what happens in refuse. It's like just letting the Reapers start their invasion, because aw poor Batarians. Only it's aw poor Geth, and then all organics get harvested.

But also:

- You spend almost the entire game listening to people telling you to destroy the Reapers, give them no quarter, etc. You don't exactly spend time listening to people who tell you, if you're faced with some difficult choices, it's better not to do anything at all.

OMG! You're the other one! I'd heard there was someone else out there that liked the grindfests in FFXII but I thought they were just screwing with me! Not that the story is bad. IMO it's one of the better FFs storywise. I was really disappointed when I found out Revenant Wings had basically nothing to do with FFXII. IX was great nostalgia even when it was new. Definitely a much needed breath of fresh air after Cloud and Squall.

QFT. Cloud is "looking for a reason to fight", so he challenges an ally to a fight for no particular reason and then balks at Sephiroth challenging him because he's "got nothing to believe in". Seriously?

But at least we get to Hell's Gate Aeris. That's unlimited laughs.

I love Xenogears, Xenosaga 1, and Xenosaga 3.  I cannot finish XS2.  It bores me to tears and the battle system is worse than FFVIII, if such a thing is possible.  That game was an abomination.  Judging all jRPGs by that one is like judging western games by Daikatana.

While Dissidia screws up many characters' personalities, it makes Golbez a million times more interesting and awesome.

A lot of the other earlier characters, the ones hat lacked much personality, actually end up coming ahead.

FFX will always have a special place in my heart, no matter what.

That's just the last one I played.  The full list is substantial.  I've even played Super Robot Wars Alpha in raw kanji.  I've just gotten tired of story elements that are geared towards a Japanese mindset.  I have a highly educated American mindset and prefer to catre to that now.

..........although, if I could get my hands on a copy of Metal Wolf Chaos...

This supports my hypothesis. Paragon Shepard's dialogue at times (especially in the decision chamber) seems a lot more dubious and indoctrinated than renegade Shep's. There's even a paragon dialogue option labeled 'I think I understand' when speaking to the "catalyst'.

My hypothesis is that paragon Shep is more empathic than renegade Shep, and therefore more susceptible to indoctrination. Empathy/compassion are a good thing, but not when dealing with hyper-intelligent mind-controlling/brainwashing/indoctrinating genocidal constructs.

Javik's line about compassion seems to support this idea.

Yuna's response to Starbinger.

Golbez got a lot more interesting in The After Years, or so I've heard. Haven't played it myself as it's on a Nintendo system.
