Catching up with all the posts. Dang it, one of you linked to smudboy and I'm watching the Bookends of Destruction and I just can't unsee all the story flaws. Still an IT otter, but the flaws, it burns my eyes...

The video is pretty hilarious though.

It's an overall flawed narrative, considering indoctrination in the ending or not.

Doesn't mean that intended themes and concepts can't be buried within.

I can't see what is flawed more: the intro or this review. Especially when it came to the Dreadnaught he assumes it's about 100m above sea level while stating it's about 1km in length and isn't able to compare the length displayed with the height it's in. Also it's way over the Reapers which are about 2km.
All he is throwing out point after point and tries with this technique to stop the viewers from thinking for themselves. At least half of his points are flawed in one way or another. No need to bother watching more of these videos as I cannot imagine them being less flawed.

Frankly, if you look hard enough at pretty much ANY narrative you'll find flaws. I would suggest just sitting back, and enjoying the story. Besides, ME is still better than around 75% of what's on the market, including games I enjoy a lot, too.

It wouldn't be that tragic if the videos themselves wouldn't be full of flaws :D

Indeed any narrative has flaws, troubles start to arise when the flaws become massive, obvious and destroy the plot or characters.

I just hope they revisit the games again. I totally wouldn't mind playing a remake with better graphics, better EMS implementation, and some of the plot holes plugged sometime in the future. I totally enjoyed the Resident Evil remake on gamecube for instance, even if the dialogue and story only had marginal upgrades.

So, the Reapers are out to save organics from synthetics, huh?

Help me refresh my memory.

Wasn't it the Reapers who turned the Geth (heretics) against organics in ME1?

Wasn't it the Reapers who helped the Geth 'upgrade' when the Quarians started a war against them?

Weren't there other examples of the Reapers actually causing synthetics to attack organics?

I can't remember off the top of my head.

Dident the Reapers take over that AI race during the Prothean cycle?

Oh and remember that according to the Catalyst he is out to preserve both Organic and Synthetic races which makes his involvement in the Quarian conflict into a lose / lose situation for him unless Shepard creates peace.

I agree.  His thoughts were interesting at first, but he started getting more and more nitpicky, and eventually devolved into opinion stating rather then any objective observations.

The ME3 intro IS flawed, however.  Easily the weakest part of the whole game (literal endings included - not even kidding) and sets up the whole saga rather poorly.

But I finally gave up listening to his ramblings when he openly attacked not only IT, but also the community members who discuss it.  Disagreement is fine, but when you start hurling abuse at people you don't even know or interact with, then you're a complete wanker.

If you've not already, try listening to Archengeia's channel.  While he does go on a tangent, and repeats the words 'if you're following me here' an awful lot, he is much more balanced in his opinions and views (on more then just Mass Effect) and is generally a pleasent listen.

Problem for most of the prolog being cut was xbox not having bluray yet. If they wanted to flesh out more stuff it would have been a third disc.

I'm not so sure.  If they cut some of the action tutorial they could have added in more exposition or even a little Earth exploration before the Reaper attack.

Or cut Allers.

From the game, not literally.  Though that would be satisfying as well.

What was so wrong with the prologue? The only thing I can remember besides the phantom kid, which doesn't count for obvious reasons, is that there was a dreadnought in Earth's atmosphere.

Might that cause a lawsuit, since they are technically selling another company's intellectual property?

I know its a mistake, but there's been loads of lawsuits over less.

Lack of explaination about what was going on.  Especially for the new players the game was supposedly catered for, this would be very confusing indeed.  Contrast to ME1 where the first section of the game is on board the Normandy, and you can talk to various crewmembers to get a bit of backstory.

Making the Alliance look completely incompetant.  Suprise attack or no, they had time to summon Shepard to a meeting and then all they can do is ask what they should do.  Admirals asking a Lieutenant Commander what to do.  Yeah.  You fill me with confidence, guys.  Probably a good job the Reapers blasted them directly afterwards.

No proper introduction to Vega.  Minor point, but supposedly he's known Shepard for six months and yet he's a complete stranger to the player.

No trial for Shepard.  Loads of us were looking forward to seeing the Alliance's reaction to Shepard's previous actions.  But we got nothing of the sort.  Disappointing.

Otherwise, the rest of the intro felt like a tutorial.  The 'tutorial' in ME1 was basically throwing you in the deep end, and ME2's tutorial was less structured and had a pace that allowed you to read all the log entires and even have a conversation with Jacob (if you enjoy such things...).  ME3's was...  Well, I didn't get much out of it.

Remember that Carnival cruise ship that crashed back in January and killed 32 people because the captain was trying to get laid?  He sued Carnival for wrongful termination.

I seriously hope the court threw the case out, and put him in jail with a little extra time for the cheek of it.

I can't say for sure, but I thought that, just as in Synthesis where it looks like Jacob and Brynn have figured it out, I thought maybe the above Control slide shows that certain groups are still working on ways to destro the Reapers.  Could be that (if these scenes have any merit) they still see the potential for the Reapers to turn against them, so they plan possible strategies for defeating them.

It's one of the reasons why I think Control is not so bad as Synthesis or even Refuse, because it might mean that Shepard has bought the galaxy time to fight back, even though he had to become a Reaper to do it.  It ties in quite nicely with the KotOR plot which was written by the same people.

yeah i liked ME2's tutorial the best. it felt smooth and even though miranda was sort of rushing you along, it added to the realism of the scene for me. nicely done.
