Apparently from what I hear though the USB devices must be calibrated only for the Wii U and cannot be used for anything else. I guess that's not TOO bad if you buy a new one just to use for the Wii U but still.
That's the case for many devices, and you can re-format at any time. Untill a universal standard is applied this will always be a problem sadly.
The thing I think with the next offering from Sony and Microsoft is that if they carry on the path they're going with their current devices is they are going to die (the devices, not companies obviously). Increasingly Microsoft and Sony are pushing for media hubs, but with smart TV's and things like Apple TV why would you buy another box that does something your TV can do without going through a third party, and in the case of Microsoft have to pay a subscription fee to do so? Nintendo are doing something different and still focusing on gameplay, whether you like what they're doing or not I think that is the important factor. That is of course presuming Microsoft and Sony carry on down the path they are currently on, which I obviously have no idea if they will. Personally I can see my self having a WiiU for Nintendo games and anything else interesting to come out for it and a PC for everything else, because it now has the ease of console use without the restrictions of it.
I for one am particularly interested that the input lag inbetween the console and the game pad is a lot less than the console to the TV, so the controller is able to send data wirelessly to the console, then from the console back to the controller along with 60 frames a second 1080p stream with only a one frame in every 60 lag. That's a lot faster than any device sends through an actual HDMI cable, so even if you don't like the WiiU as a concept the possibilities for wireless video transfer is at least interesting.
