I've just been doing some reading in the LotR Wiki, and found a neat article about Gandalf
"Of all the Maiar, he was the only one who was known to have successfully
completed his task of saving Middle Earth from Sauron, having guided
and counciled many to the ultimate defeat of the Dark Lord. Though never
seen again in Middle-earth, his actions and labors ensured that all
were saved from Sauron's tyranny, and allowed men to rise into the age
of their dominion. Thus, in a way, he can be seen as one of, if not the
greatest of all the Maiar, who worked with hope and courage to lead,
rather than to dominate and destroy, as Sauron had done."
(Destroy in this case can be thought to be Synthesis for Shepard, instead of 'Destroy' choice, as imo Synthesis is genetic and cultural destruction)
Was at bottom of page
Yep, very Shepard-y. Also note that Frodo did not try to use the Ring himself, not did he try to join with Sauron. Because he's the hero, and heroes don't do that.
Frodo became corrupted in the end (I can't recall how the books treated this part though, except more as an affliction than a possession) but his *companion* finished the fight for him, as Gollum enabled victory to occur.
Frodo/Gandalf = Shepard
Gollum = TIM
The army at the Black Gate = the galaxy's forces combined
The companions taking part in that fight = all your squadmates
Samwise = the select squadmate/LI that pulls you out of rubble...
What I don't think many get is that Shepard can very well LOSE at the end, and still be victorious. Up til London, he may have done all he needed in order to get the job done, in the IT sense, and the final decision is but a moral one, to Bioware (as they put it in their own words).
