Gotta admit I've never played the Witcher series even though everyone keeps gushing about it. A non customizable main character in an RPG always pus me off, even though I really liked HR.

You haven't lost anything.

You've only missed the best RPG of 2011, with a better story than Mass Effect, more choices and ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES than Mass Effect and more realistic characters than Mass Effect, better graphics than Mass Effect and better music than Mass Effect, that's all.

Nah, I prefer Sci-Fi to fantasy. And the best RPG of 2011 was UNDOUBTEDLY Deus Ex: HR.

Is Deus Ex: HR even an RPG? I mean not trying to turn this into an "what is an RPG" argument, but honestly, I never saw Deus Ex as an RPG francize. It was always more of an action-adventure type of game in my opinion. Just like Dishonored, which a lot of people also call an RPG, but really isn't in my opinion.

You have power trees, distinctive playing styles, lots of dialogue and great diverse story. It's an RPG. With perfect balance between playability and cluttered interfaces.

Fair enough. I still hate the ending of Deus Ex: Human Revolution though. But not as much as I hate ME3's ending.

I always get REALLY turned off by "pick your own A, B, C or D ending" finales. It's so anti-climax, stupid and lazy.

I do like Adam Jensens speech in the epilogue though. It's nice how his speech reflects your playstyle and final decision. But still, A, B, C, D endings... laaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Story's not that diverse. The aren't any choices that have any major effect on the plot, while I hear Witcher 2 has branching storylines.

To be fair, "Final Fantasy" is probably the first thing that the average gamer thinks of when they hear "RPG", and the only choices you get there is what type of sword to use.

Just finished my first playthrough of Witcher II the other day. I thought it was good, but not as good as people have made it out to be.

Play it a 2nd time and make the opposite choices from what you did the first playthrough. You'll be amazed.

I'm going to give it a shot, after all, I'm an obsessive completionist; I suppose it didn't help that I got a brokenly overpowered weapon within the first hour or so of playing the game.

I don't really remember specifics of the first one I guess. Been a couple years. If you mean her getting him into bed in the prologue though, I'm not sure that counts since the game practially had an entire subplot around screwing as many different people as humanly (or inhumanly) possible. At first I didn't understand that angle. It was like every woman in that world has a fetish for hideously scarred up freaks. Zaeed would get more ass than New York subway bench in the Witcher universe. But then I realized it's probably because Geralt is the only man there that doesn't beat the **** out of the women. I've seen some crapsack worlds, but godDAMN...

Well to be honest, Geralt's only big scar is the slash down his cheek and over his eye.  That's a 'sexy scar', apperently.

Plus he's got white hair and wears leather.  Some women are really into that.

And has two huge swords.

And lots of 'potions'.

Although the method of deciding the ending was, er, uncreative, I did really like the epilogues as well. My biggest problem with them is it being a prequel so none of them make a difference anyway.

It's not, really, but it's viewed as such when poised against the competition right now.

And it does have substantive role-playing components in the high-death and high-stealth paradigm, though they mostly translate to binary sides of storytelling once the ending comes around.  Still, your choices and methods of eradication actually do impact the game, on a level that's a step or two more significant than, say, BioShock.

Same with Chrono Trigger, and honestly there's not much choice there - you just pick the one with the bigger numbers.

What makes an RPG for me is the depth of the gameplay, and involved I get in the story and characters.

Because there are a lot of games out there which are highly customisable and yet aren't RPG's in the slightest - Mechwarrior, Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty...

Oh I'm not saying Triss is a bad girl. She loves Geralt. She loves him enough that she wants to restore is memories, despite the fact that it might mean Geralt will remember Yennefer and might leave Triss for her.

But don't tell me that Triss didn't try to manipulate Geralt in the first game. Back in TW1 she didn't seem so unhappy about the fact that Geralt lost his memories. I think she didn't mind at all at that point.

Well there is something about Geralt that attracts women in The Witcher universe. It's not just in the games, it's in the books too. Geralt is just a charmer. What he lacks in looks he makes up with his charisma, sense of humor and strong appearance (when you see Geralt you know he's a tough son of a b*tch you don't want to mess around with, women are attracted to that I guess).

But no, it's not just the prologue. It's how Triss refuses to tell Geralt about their past and how she wants to have sex with Geralt all the time. Even though we as the player only see them having sex 2 times, it's heavily suggested that they have lots of sex off-screen. Geralt assumes that Triss and he used to be lovers in the past and Triss does not tell the truth. She knows that Geralt and her were never lovers in the past, but she doesn't tell that to Geralt, like, ever. She even suggests that the opposite is true. I don't know who she's fooling more; Geralt or herself.

JRPGs are basically a genre of their own. I do like them, but don't think of them alongside, say, New Vegas and ME.

My own top 5 for 2011:

1. The Witcher 2
2. Skyrim
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
4. Zelda: Skyward Sword
5. Portal 2

2011 was amazing.

My top 5 for 2012:

1. Assassins Creed 3
2. Dishonored
3. Guild Wars 2
4. Mass Effect 3
5. Kid Icarus: Uprising

My top 5 for 2012 is really pathetic in comparison to my top 5 for 2011. It takes no expert to see that the games in my top 5 for 2011 are vastly superior to the games in my top 5 for 2012.

It's all down to opinion.

I think Assassins'c Creed 3 is worse than Mass Effect 3, but both are better than the 5 games you listed in 2011. Skyrim is below those two just though. Didn't like Deus Ex, didn't like Portal 2, didn't like Zelda. Did like Dishonored though haven't played GW2 or KI: U.

How is that even possible? The gear you get in chapter 1 is absolute crap in comparison to what you can get in chapter 3.

I'd say try to play the game on Dark Mode. it's the most fun difficulty in the game. It's hard and it gives you an extra quest-line every chapter in which you have to gather a cursed set of armor. Once you have the cursed armor and cursed weapons complete, you can lift the curse and then you'll get really good gear that you'll need to defeat the boss of the chapter. Without that special gear the bosses will be extremely hard to defeat.

I really like Dark Mode in The Witcher 2. And the costume designs of the cursed gear in Dark Mode are really nice.

Eh. If I had to guess, I'd say the main factor is probably the fact it's completely risk free. Witchers are sterile and immune to disease. Pregnancy and disease are pretty much the only reason people have a hug hello instead of an intercourse hello. But I digress. A good point about her not telling him they weren't lovers in the past. I'd forgotten about that.

I omniloathe dark mode.  That atrocious visual and audio that go with even a full set of cursed stuff just makes them unusable for me.

To be fair, I had written this year off completely until a few months ago, but there have been some quality games released in the last few months that have raisaed it a bit. IMO Dishonored is the best game of the last few years, and also Hitman, AC3, X-Com, Far Cry 3, Mark of The Ninja as well. 2011 is superior, but there was a fightback over the last few months.
