what if the citadel/sovereign has taken all these people and pulped them, then replaced them with dodgy models to fool shep?

I don't know, but that would be a great excuse for those horrible 8-bit sprites you see running towards the Reapers in Vanvouver. Bioware - "Yeah uh... we totally intended them to look like refugees from the SNES era to subtly suggest the unreality of the situation to observant players. Well done for spotting them guys (nervous laugh)".;)

EDIT - ah you 'd me.

I have issue with people saying the 2D models are Bioware being 'lazy'.  Being lazy would be leaving areas completely empty, or restricting line of sight so you can't see into those areas at all.

They only use the 2D sprites in a few areas of the game.  All in sketchy areas.  As if they want us to look at it more and think 'why is it like this?'

Hey, I'm not saying that there is no problems with that - in fact i'm saying that we have a big ****ing problem with that wall - you can check for yourself - it is simply not there. That is a problem so big - that the whole citadel might not be real because of it.

Oh my god!
Thats amazing! We can't see or understand certain things when playing as Shepard and seeing what he sees, but in the dialogue
dialouge we can see how things actually are!!!

Here... sorry for crappy screenshot quality, I play on 360.

I realize the angle isn't really good for comparison, but if you don't believe me, check it out for yourself. There is no sign that says D26 anywhere on the windows. Only when you talk to Avina.

Speaking of music, if/when they do a reveal and we get the rest of the war, they need something epic for the final battle music. Example. Full orchestra, Latin, the works.

The Ace Combat franchise has some of the best soundtracks. Here's one of my personal favorites:

Wow, we finally find some common ground lol. Yeah, they're always great. Megalith -Agnus Dei- just turned the awesome up to 11. Speaking of which, here's a little known mindblower to the series if you're interested. It's damn near impossible to see on the fly (pun intended) but if you pause at the right second, you can see a logo on that giant ICBM at the end of Megalith. The South Belkan Munitions Factory. It's a V2! Belka must've sold one to Erusia after the Belkan War. My jaw shattered against the ground when I found out that all PS2 installments were about stopping the exact same weapon. And that they managed to put that reference in for an enemy that wouldn't even be introduced for years, and then never made a point of it.

Shame they switched to real world setting in the latest installment. Hopefully they go back to what brought them to the dance. They said "you're either changing or you're dying in this business," but that's a little hard to swallow from the company that's still milking Pac-Man.

I'll be honest I would never have noticed those sprites if they hadn't been pointed out in various mickey-take videos. I was far too engrossed in the action, so they certainly didn't impinge on my enjoyment.

In fact I didn't even notice the kid was on the balcony until I watched Angry Joe's IT video.

My apologies if I sounded dismissive of Bioware's hard work. It wasn't my intention.

I think it just doesn't load it. For example, all the people on that whole floor don't show up either.

I don't think the emptiness on the Citadel means anything... probably just memory management.

That said, good catch on the announcement! I had never heard that before... another sneakily hidden reference to indoctrination, really cool.

Good job Dem, keep spotting them!

However, your comments on the Citadel emptiness made me think. You know, when you're outside Purgatory, and you look down, you see these unfinished, untextured and motionless character models?

Everybody says that it's an obvious illustration of Bioware not having time to polish the game.

But thinking about it, it doesn't make sense. There's 'unfinished' character models there of which there are finished models in the game. There's even a finished Elcor outside of Purgatory at some point, as if they want to remind you of that fact.

I mean, it's not like they sculpt every model you see from scratch. It would have taken them just as much effort to place the finished models there. Making them animate shouldn't take time at all either, there are default animations for all the models.

Another thing that's weird is that it's only the characters standing in the light that are unfinished and motionless. The shadows around them, on all sides, are populated with an unusual amount of people, all completely animated and normal looking.

It's almost as if they're intentionally drawing our attention to them, as if Bioware wants us to notice them.

Then when you think about James' line, the one about it not being right and all an illusion...

I'm not saying the entire citadel or the entire game is an illusion, don't get me wrong, it's probably symbolic, if it is indeed intentional.

I don't have a screenshot, sorry.

Thoughts?

You never draw attention to untextured and unfinished stuff if there is no context. It's rather to assume that the part had been worked on but left hanging when the guy who made that was needed for something more important.

I think that if any of these oddities mean anything - it's that Shep's perception is being affected by indoctrination, not something radical like the Citadel not being real. Or maybe even more likely - the Citadel having these unreal oddities is foreshadowing of the ending being an illusion, or perhaps even both: a sign of indoctrination, and foreshadowing.

Did you see the D24/D26 thing I posted at the bottom of the previous page? It's really odd, because why would they want to pre-render that scene? It's almost like it was included to draw your attention to it.

Symbolism. There's all these little oddities and rarities on the Citadel that seem to have been included to make it unreal. It's foreshadowing for the Citadel being an illusion in the ending, I think.

Why put an unfinished model of an Elcor there when they have a finished model, ever since the first game?

Did you see the D24/D26 thing I posted? Why would they pre-render that scene?

Indeed. Does Aria own Purgatory, or does she just hang out there? I got the impression she named it that to express her distaste for the Citadel, but I could be mis-remembering.

Wow, that's really cool. I agree with you too about keeping it in a fictional world. While Assault Horizon was fun, I loved Ace Combat 6 so much more( I own a 360) and loved playing the ones before that on my friend's PS2. Hopefully they go back to that world soon. Also, did you hear that they may be doing an Ace Combat HD Collection?
PS: You quoted the post before I put up my personal favorite:

Shepard: Do you have any information on Purgatory?
Avina: The term "purgatory" is present in many civilizations, with varying associated uses and meanings.
Shepard: No, the bar called Purgatory.
Avina: The Citadel Tourist and Visitor Board has no establishment by that name on its list of approved nightlife entertainment facilities.

Ah yes, the thick plottens.

Have you noticed that, when you talk to Avina in the Normandy Docking Bay, and you ask her about the local features, you are shown a shot in which you can see a huge sign saying "D 26" on the window, even though you're in D 24? And if you check out all the windows that look out upon the Normandy, there's no sign that says D26 at all, it says D24.

It could be because of it being pre-rendered and them changing around the numbers of the docking bay after the fact, but why would they want to pre-render a shot when talking to Avina?

It's a shot from another docking bay. D24 should be in the background.
There is nothing prerendered.

How do you know? Did you already investigate that cutscene? If that's the case, then sorry, I missed it.

I've walked all around the place, didn't see it at all. There was a sign saying D26, but it was on the wall, over the doorway at the end of the hall. Why would they shoot that frame from the docking bay next to it, which you can't even access?

And if so, how do you explain the angle? It seems impossible to me.

Well, if the name Purgatory is significant, it's quite encouraging for an IT reveal.

Purgatory being the place of temporary suffering to perfect the soul before entering heaven = Shepard purging the taint of indoctrination and getting his / her just reward?
