It started about 40 mln years ago. Harbinger is thought to be about 39 mln yo.

"It is unknown exactly how long the galaxy has been subjected to these cycles, but the age of the Leviathan of Dis, an ancient Reaper corpse, indicates that the Reapers have existed for at least a billion years."

So how come Harbinger, the first Reaper, is about 39 mln yo? I'll answer. Because Leviathan of Dis is a Leviathan, not a Reaper. Leviathans existed for at least a billion years.

Where does it say that?  Directly contradicts what other sources say if he's the first.

First: He's not necessarily the first reaper.
Second: He's only estimated that age by codex writers.
Third: Dis may not have been estimated correctly either.

He is the first as told Shepard by Leviathan in the DLC.

Not sure about the age thing, but the Leviathans confirmed Harbinger as the first Reaper. I would, like you, like to know where he got Harbinger's age from.

And we know how inaccurate the codex can be when it comes to that sort of thing.

Its especially hard to estimate something's age if you can't get a sample of it into a lab.  Unlike the Leviathan of Dis, or Sovereign.

Doesn't give his age.  Where did you get the age from?

Fourth: That estimation was made when Leviathan was thought to be a Reaper. Hence it really concerns the age of Leviathans.

Remember Citadel scientists couldn't tell Sovereign's debris was older than two hundred years so they're hardly the best sources on Harby's age.

harbinger is the remains of the leviathans.... surely they made another reaper before him otherwise where did the blueprints come from?

estimation.......agreed

Thing is how does anyone get acurate information about a dead (supposedly) reaper corpse when if you get too close you become indoctrinated?

The Leviathan of Dis was always a Reaper. For reasons that make no sense, the scientists decided to also call the thing that killed it a Leviathan.

But that was a mistake. Leviathan is not a Reaper.

While following up on the dead reaper known as the Leviathan of Dis Shepard instead finds creatures that get called leviathans because they were at first believed to be that reaper.

Having the same name doesn't make them the same. Naming my cat Mr. Spock will not transform him into Leonard Nimoy.

Creature*s* there are more than one Leviathan (the fleshy ones), 3 if my memory serves.
