Uh, no, not the placebo effect. Have you ever played competitive online MP? Frame rate has a MASSIVE effect on your responsiveness and the smoothness of your movements and actions. That's why I can't play BF3 on High. I need to be around 40+ FPS or so in order to be able to play, and my wimpy ATI 5750 can only maintain around 30 FPS on High.
To throw my hat into the FPS debate, personally I do notice an effect, but it's not always a positive one. My TV has an default option to generate additional frames to supposedly boost it's output to 60 frames per second. I very quickly had to turn it off, as I found it too distracting.
Films looked
too smooth. I remember watching a DVD of LotR and everthing had that flat, lifeless quality you associate with day-time soap operas.
I'm hoping the Hobbit will have better results, seeing as it was actually shot at a high frame rate, rather than being increased artificially later. But I'm a little apprehensive about going to see it tbh.
