Submission = Refuse?
I think that is plainly wrong.
Refuse is militantly anti-submissive to the extent that you (in literal POV) refuse to use any option the Guardian/Reapers present you with and in the end you doom the galaxy.

Well, Saren didn't actively advocate Synthesis until the end. For most of the game, he advocated submission which is actually more along the lines of Refuse than synthesis. Kai Leng, however, advocated Synthesis the entire time.

Right, once he was even more indoctrinated.

"I am a vision of the future, Shepard."

I don't think there's an example of Refuse in the trilogy, because not taking action makes for crappy characters.

+1. Refuse is what Shepard said in ME1. She'd rather die than become a slave.

On that note: Hackett and ReaperShep both say "future" four times in their end speeches, while SynthesisEDI also says it once. Like you pointed out before, none of it has happened yet; it's what Shepard hopes for.

I won't open this can of worms again, but Refuse can be so much more in the light of IT than what is presented to us in literal POV.
Personally, I think Refuse has actually some sort of breath-scene-like event with the Guardian's reveal of its true voice.
Why does it do that?
Two possibilities:
1. The masquerade is not needed anymore, since Shepard has been broken (the common intepretation here).
2. The masquerade is not needed anymore, since Shepard denies any cooperation and won't help the Reapers at all.

And before everyone starts a sharpening their pitch-forks and lightning their torchs, I am not taking away any of the merits Destroy has. I just think that Refuse may be a way out of the hallucination as well.

So... synthesis is a vision of the future. I'm totally using that more.

1. A vision of (taking place in) the future.

2. A vision that you see that shows the future.

3. Both at once in IT.

My mistake. I suppose the suit of armour was rather a give-away.

I'd say the same applies for the Liara VI scene. Even there, Shepard has still hope to defeat the Reapers (in the next cycle though).
In the end this leaves us with no ending where the Reapers win, if we think literally (and I do believe BW's statement that there are endings that let the Reapers win, but I do not buy the statement that they mean the GAME OVER screen, because that is just way too stupid).

Again, well said. I like the concept of both having varying degrees of effectiveness at breaking the hallucination. I also like the idea (though I'm not married to it) that refuse and control could still end well if you have someone to save you (Liara, Javik, Geth, Rachni etc.) but synthesis would never end well.

I suppose my main point against Refuse is that in IT, Destroy is not one of the kid's options. And in literal it is, but there's no tricks and everything does what he says it does, so there's also no reason to pick it. So Refuse is really only an option in the Deception Theory, and it sucks.

@bleedinguranium- the ME dark series people are just referring to the fact that they want the lights off in the pic. They don't have a party with the lights on lol

I must admit I have a soft spot for Refuse. I like the way it rejects the catalyst's entire philosophy that organic / synthetic conflict is inevitable. If it wasn't for the slightly spiteful "you lose" epilogue, and lack of a breath scene it would be my favourite. At the moment though, high EMS destroy still edges it for me.
