I've never played any Baldurs Gate games. I should some time.
I found BG1 quite slow, BG2 though... man. It was ridiculously huge, and gave me an entirely new perspective on the D&D stuff. Still one of my favourite rpgs of all time, alongside Shadowrun on the SNES.
Plus a lot of the battles you faced in it were non-linear - you could start certain quests or make certain encounters when you were woefully unprepared for them early in the game, then go back 50+ hours later and clean house.
Edit: speaking of BG2, and D&D... the Reapers really are just Bioware's (giant space-age) take
on the Aboleth, aren't they? Read the society description - you'll see what I mean...
