It's horrible what happened in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, I believe that many more lives would have been lost on both sides had the US decided not to do so. The japanese would have thought until the end, possibly losing hundreds of thousands of soldiers. The US would have likely won in the end, but at what cost? Millions of young men?
Unfortunately. However, ruthless calculus is one of the main parts of war. Even today.
