No, they were sacrificed.

Some ancient religions did have a twisted form of God-sacrifice where their king was seen as an avatar of their God, and the tribe would sacrifice their king to honour him.

It makes some sort of sense that Reapers wouldn't consider a 'lesser species' worthy of giving tribute.  Thus some of the petty excuses Harbinger gave for not wanting to harvest some species makes sense.

Not to mention "We are your salvation through destruction."  They see it as an honour to be sacrificed, and you ascend to Godhood to take your place among the Heavenly Host.

This line of thinking has a very extreme religious slant to it.  Which is underlaying through much of Mass Effect already, so its not a big stretch.  Only Gods are created.

So it might have been more of a controlled transcendence into a higher state of being. But not all Leviathans wanted that to happen and hence the Remainders were cast out and driven into hiding, forever leaving in a constant state of terror.

Oh, it does make sense that Reapers' thinking is based on Leviathans'.

Yes, the Catalyst is certainly lying, or at least reaaaally twisting the truth. And yeah, it'll never end, so all the more reason to kill them all now. Sythesis is even more gross now

the other side of this is the reapers could ALL be squidhead in hiding, controlling reaper shells. thats why they arnt bothered about losing a few.....they are just shells.... the real bad guys are hidden.
