Is that your professional speculation on this, Rose.?

Either that or a suppository.

Regardless, its designed for something huge!

Lol cant use the rule of maths all the time it take to long in the cinematic to open them if it was realistic

True  But still, BW always says "We want ME to be realistic", then we have superspeed Citadel, people being crushed due to rotation, and :wizard:

Wait, am I stupid or is it just ridiculous or is the cinematic sped up? According to the end cinematic, the arms take ~25s to move 90°
The arms are 44.7km long
Contructing a circle to determine the way the outer parts of the arms traveled: 44.7km*2*pi ~ 281km for circumference
281km/4 = 70.25 km (way of the top of the arms)
70.25km/25s = 2.81km/s = 2810m/s (speed of tops)

Wat?

So what is it: Did I forget everything about geometry within a few weeks of doing algebra? Or is that just ridiculous?

The Crucible/Citadel have the power of plot on their side, they care nothing for math. Or it could be :wizard:

@Megumi
Those images bring up another interesting point then: there is at least one Sovereign-class Reaper in the way, why did it let the Crucible dock? We do not see it destroyed. Then of course it disappears completely in your second image.

I heard objects can move :D
I don't think the Reapers want to smash one of their capital ships into it when they already move out of the way with destroyers.

Such animations are always sped up for viewer convenience, or do you want to sloooowly watch the arms open? That would be super bad pacing. In my opinion it's the same with the crucible explosion... eye candy.
Also in some of the docking animations the arms don't rotate at all.

Looks about right, though it looks like it's rotating faster than what it should to simulate the correct gravity.

So, it looks like we got 18 G on top of the arms. Who needs the explosion anymore^^

Those images still bring up the point of the Crucible docking on the wrong side from where it was going into the Citadel.

I'm afraid I do not follow you.

As far as I can tell, approach is always from the blunt end of the Citadel.

The Presidium ring appears to be farther inside the station, when it is closed, due to the the arms, that connects it to the "petals", bringing them together by swinging back. That could account for the mistaken impression, when combined with the camera angles and the jump in time between shots, while it opens.

I think it's pretty safe to say that mass effect fields can act as inertial dampeners, judging by the fact that we didn't hear about massive casualties at the end of ME1 and, come to think of it, FTL travel is even possible because otherwise we would be crushed to a paste every time we used a mass relay or even traveled to a different solar system.

It could be. Maybe the camera jumps get everything confused.

BW cinematic designers: trolling realism since 2012 B)
But yeah, would be kinda boring, watching the Citadel open for 5 minutes
Or they just add a renegade interrupt: Shep: "F*** it, I don't care if thousands of people die, open that thing already!" *presses button for superspeed*

Also in some of the docking animations the arms don't rotate at all.

Really? Why's that? edit: btw, I'd say lazyness, but I don't like saying that, so I just think it ;)

My maths is truly pitiful, but some googling suggests that the centripetal acceleration for 2810m/s and a radius of 44.7km would be 176.6 m/sqr(s), as per a=sqr(v)/r, which I suppose would be 18 times average g. Heavy. :P

EDIT: Oops, someone who knows more had already been at it...

Not_helpingly: A good day to be Elcor, I suppose. :D

There's a new show on the Escapist ("reel physics"), by the way, where they do the calculations for crazy stunts in movies. I am certainly not going to check their numbers and assertations, but it's still kind of entertaining. :)

You have to wonder why Bioware went to the trouble of making that graphic of the citadel opening its arms, knowing that many Mass Effects fans are so familiar with physics, as you guys proved so admirably above.

They were just asking for trouble really. If they were just following the "rule of cool" they could have done something equally spectacular by keeping the arms parallel and having energy arc between them the way a relay does. It's almost like they were inviting people to nitpick and question the reality of the situation...

But no, they totally wanted us to take everything literally.  Despite, you know, their comments that there are parts of ME3 meant to have non-literal interpretations.
