I've heard a theory that Liara got herself pregnant there, which is something I find quite likely. Asari do choose when they do or don't get pregnant after all. You can do it regardless of whether you romance her, and no matter what you do, she always has a thing for Shep, even a FemShep.
Regardless of gender and romance it happens, other than choosing not to do it, which would be an easy retcon. This is perfectly set up for a new protagonist, Shepard's daughter
