I just thought of this, maybe it has been stated, I don't feel like searching through 400+ pages.  What if Shepard, or a representative from the cycle that built the Crucible is the actual Catalyst.  It is that person's choice that activates and directs the energy from the Crucible which is then fed through the relay network from the Citidel and without that choice the same cycle continues.

One more small nitpicky thing. When the elevator takes Shepard to the crucible his hand is hanging off. Now if the platform he was on is flush with the floor he wakes up on then his hand would have been snipped off as the platform raised into position. Again, just food for thought, or fuel for the already raging inferno of nerddom that is this theory.

Hate to say it, but what Chris said was probably the right thing. If they disproved the theory, not only would you have the people who didn't like the ending, but the IT people fighting. These forums would probably implode. Not to mention you'd have a bunch of news sites writing articles about it.

They're trying to contain the situation. Worst thing to do would be to start more fires.

Well, they must have known that basicaly the same thing would happen when ME3 was released too right? The alnernative to confirming or denying IT is to slowly but surely lose the remaining fanbase. And IMO, revealing IT is a win for everyone.

Oka remember at the end, Shepard is seeing the future, well thinking back what Kadin said, is getting me to think. Why is it that when Kadin said this before the EC made no sense, but with the EC now it does. Think about this, if Shepard is now able to see the chocies play out in Shepard's mind. What's to say, that as Shepard is dying, he/she sees the future, that he/she wanted, but the Reapers, are allowing Shepard, to believe, that he/she made the right choice.

Also when we see Shepard in the Catalyst chambers, Shepard is wide awake, and this is the only time, Shepard obeys the Catalyst command, that is coming from a REAPER, that is telling Shepard to wake up/ get up. Yes Shepard obeys orders, but this is coming from a Reaper, that is telling Shepard what is right, and what is wrong.


Also has anyone done a comparesen to Brainack, and Ultron, to compare the Catalyst. If not, then I will because all three of them have good goals, in their version, of right, but with the others, their views are different.

Since we're on the topic, I have a theory about the Crucible's origin that I have mentioned before, but really quick:

What if the Crucible was a test by whoever created the Reapers? The creators (possibly the Leviathans) realized the error of their creation, but were unable to stop Harbinger and the rest of the Reapers because, like the Protheans, they did not cooperate with the rest of the galaxy. So, in their final moments they designed the device meant to stop the Reapers, but made it so that it would take an entire galaxy coming together to build it. After all, the word crucible literally means a test or trial and the writers specifically chose to call it the Crucible when they could have called it anything.

Now at the end, Shepard is having his/her own crucible or trial (remember the start of the game was supposed to literally be a trial). Only, this time it's taking the metaphorical definition or the other meaning of crucible - a container where metals are heated to melt - to see whether he will melt under the pressure of indoctrination. If he does, the Crucible will not work or will backfire, but if he doesn't melt, and he managed to get the galaxy to work together (a high EMS) the Crucible will fire and the Reapers will be destroyed with the entire galaxy entering a Brave New World.

Just a very quick (and unedited) version of a larger theory.

Edit: in my theory Shepard is the catalyst. The catalyst being the "chosen one" who has the will power to not succumb to indoctrination.

Pretty much why I believe they chose the name "Crucible" as well, though I may have read it when you mentioned it before.

Exactly. Just like how a "catalyst" is not affected by the reaction it is accelerating.

Sure. So basically that thing is not the catalyst. (I always thought Shepard would be the catalyst, especially considering she/he wouldn't have to die). The literalist argument (because they don't understant fiction or literature) is that it's basically just a cool word and has no further meaning. Well, aside from the obvious arguments against that, I have one that I find quite powerful:
Bioware already had a name for that character. The Guardian. Jessica even refers to it as that to this day. So if they wanted the name to make sense, they could have stuck with the name they already had. Guardian.

In that case, the only way I can interpretate the Red Herring & co. is the 'Take Back Earth' itself.
If IT can remain merely a possibilty and there will indeed be no post-ME3-ending DLC, then the only twist I can come up with is the end of the war itself: We expected to take back Earth and defeat the Reaper threat but, as it turns out, it could be that we never can.

Wow...not my favorite twist of all time. <_<

Seconded. I was really looking forward to a Mass Effect 2 style endrun/suicide mission taking back Earth. Or well, unfortunately they used false advertising. I will always be pissed if this never happens...
