But you're comparing an MMO to an RPG. The typical MMO is alot more open ended than the typical RPG. There are plenty of choices that matter in Mass Effect, but the games are still going to have to follow a basic narrative or there wont be much of a story.
It may even end up with the entire countryside being invaded by the centaurs, who then end up destroying almost everything. In which case, you and other players have to launch an operation to retake the countryside.
