After Tuchanka, after Mordin dies (oh, I cried at this point during my first playthrough), on the Normandy Shepard sees a dream about Ashley! Why Ashley? She wasn't really a good friend to Shepard with all her hatred towards aliens.

Why not Mordin?

Reapers just don't know yet that he died. So they put someone else into the dream :-)

Ashley was still a comrade, and therefore important to Shepard (admittedly it does differ depending on how you play him/her). And why wouldn't the Reapers know he died anyway if Shep was in the initial stages of indoctrination?

Because being able to read the victim's memory only comes at very advanced stages of indoctrination?

"Having done sh!t others would've been court martialed for." - Anderson.
And in detail, having worked for Cerberus is reason enough for the Alliance to ... at least investigate Shepard's case more thoroughly.

The official game guide tried saying there were 16 endings pre-ec. I wouldn't trust it.

I actually just got Dragon Age: Origins. I just played through the portion in the mage tower and The Fade, and I'm seeing some eerie parallels to the IT.

Yeah... reading... reading... okay, I've given it 10 minutes or so, this is the best I could find:
Shepard would eventually split from Cerberus and desperately fight to stall the invasion. This extreme action taken by the Spectre would eventually strip Normandy from their command, awaiting court-martial at the hands of the System Alliance.

Well, we all know what they mean by 16 "different" endings, in which case it is accurate but the ending is for another debate. Does the guide say anything like....'depending on whether the player has completed Arrival' or something like..'Me3 begins with Shepard being detained for'..?

No. It is not. Both Hudson and Walters are very clear on the subject. Read again the links I had posted earlier. Shepard doing Arrival is considered canon by the developers.

Shame!

But I wonder what made them write it? Maybe the real ending to come has 16 versions and they were just told without any explanation to put it there. So it might be foreshadowing IT.

 "split from Cerberus and desperately fight to stall the invasion", can we take this to be implying Arrival so?

Several of the sixteen endings were just ways to get the sixish. Like needing different EMS amounts depending on anderson were counted as different endings.

Well, as far as I see it, the dreams were "connection" attempts to Shepard's mind. Once connected Reapers learned that Shepard was mourning her friend. But to learn that it was Mordin they needed some more time. We all know Shepard was too strong to submit to indctrination at an instance.

Hmm... So there were 27 endings. 3 EMS levels x 3 choice options x 3 flashbacks (Ash, Kaidan, Liara) !!! And times the number of different combinations of squadmates getting out of the Normandy gives hundreds of endings in total.
