Oh yeah forgot about the Total War series, After rethinking it my favourite rts would be either Company of Heroes or Napoleon: Total War

No best option for me really, if I had to pick it would be Red Alert and Tiberium Dawn, those were my very first RTS's and Red Alert is worth playing just to hear the Hell March really.

Just in terms of fun rather than how great they are as strategy games, and several with expansions and mods:
Rome: Total War, Empire: Total War, Medieval 2: Total War, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, , Sim City, Civ Ground Control series, World in Conflict.Special mention for Starcraft and Homeworld.
I also consider some other games strategy games too, but have stuck to RTS.

Best strategy games? Chess for one. Chess takes hella skill, intelligence and the ability to see ahead and balance countless calculations, especially mid-game.
World class poker... with RL money, especially at top tier casinos.

It would be nice if online money poker were legal here in the states. Playing with play money is fun, but it's just not as exciting. Going all-in just doesn't have the same effect.
But yeah, poker(texas hold'em) is probably my favorite competitive game too. Nothing like a little psychological warfare.

@Jozape -- That psych warfare is an integral part of poker strategy, and it sure isn't easy. But it sure is exciting!
